News:

A bill authored by State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) that would remove restrictions that make it more difficult for salvage recyclers to accept old vehicles passed the Senate on Monday. Senate Bill 65 would allow salvage recyclers to buy, accept or dispose of vehicles over 15 years old without a title as long as it is sold for scrap and specific information is reported to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The legislation would also require a salvage recycler to report to law enforcement if they determine the vehicle stolen or if the listed owner does not match the individual who provided the vehicle.

"Salvage recyclers around the state are losing revenue because of restrictions put on the sale of scrap cars," Tomes said. "This bill would remove some of those restrictions so sellers don't travel out of the state to scrap vehicles. I am pleased to see this bill pass the Senate."

SB 65 will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Read more about this and other bills at iga.in.gov.
