The Posey County Area Plan Commission heard from more than 60 residents during a special meeting on Monday night that was focused on proposed changes to the county's Unified Development Ordinance related to data centers. The meeting, held at the Hovey House in Mount Vernon, reached capacity as community members voiced opposition to the possibility of a data center being built in Posey County, with some attendees waiting outside. Officials emphasized that no formal application has been submitted for a data center and said the commission does not have the authority to impose a moratorium, noting that decision would rest with the Posey County Commissioners.
Two Evansville men are headed to federal prison after admitting their roles in a methamphetamine trafficking operation in Vanderburgh County. Federal prosecutors say 47-year-old Isaac J. Horne was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and two counts of meth distribution. 42-year-old Christopher M. Youngblood received a 7-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Both men will also serve five years of supervised release after completing their prison terms. Authorities say the Crossroads Homeland Security Task Force led the investigation. According to court records, Horne was the main supplier in a drug trafficking operation that distributed methamphetamine throughout Vanderburgh County. Prosecutors say he supplied the drugs to distributors, including Youngblood, who then sold them to other dealers and users. Investigators say Horne used several tactics to avoid law enforcement, including storing drugs at other people's homes, directing associates to make deliveries, and using bank accounts in other people's names to receive payments. According to prosecutors, the investigation found the two men distributed roughly 16 pounds of methamphetamine in the Evansville area over a 7-month period between May and December of 2024. Federal prosecutors also noted both men have prior felony convictions involving methamphetamine, while Horne has an extensive criminal history that includes previous cocaine dealing convictions and violent offenses.
Students at 72 schools across Indiana will get the chance to take learning beyond the classroom this school year, thanks to a state grant program aimed at getting kids outdoors. The Discover the Outdoors Field Trip Grant Program is providing schools with grants of up to $500 to help cover transportation, program fees, and classroom supplies for educational visits to Indiana State Parks. The goal is to give students hands-on learning experiences while introducing them to Indiana's natural resources. Four Tri-State schools are among this year's grant recipients: West Elementary, Veale Elementary, St. Wendel Catholic School, and Evansville Day School. State officials say the program helps remove financial barriers, making it possible for more students to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences in the outdoors.
Family Matters of Posey County is helping local families prepare for the new school year today with its annual Backpack Give-Away. Today’s event is from Noon until 3:00 PM at Hedges Central Gymnasium in Mount Vernon. In Major League Baseball on Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals got beat in the opening game of their 4-game set at home with the Chicago Cubs, 7-3. Alex Bregman went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and hit his 11th home run. Also, for Chicago, Nico Hoerner went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and drilled his 5th home run. On the St. Louis side, Jose Fermin launched his 5th home run. The Cubs improve to 60-46, and the Cardinals fall to 53-53. Game 2 of the 4-game set is tonight at 6:45 PM.
In Cincinnati, the Reds had the opening game of their 3-game series vs the Cleveland Guardians postponed due to weather. The two teams play a doubleheader today at 12:40 PM and 6:10 PM. The Reds are 49-55 on the year.
The Chicago White Sox lost the opening game of their 4-game series at home vs the New York Yankees, 9-5. Colson Montgomery went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI in the loss for Chicago. The White Sox are 55-50 and continue their series at home with the Yankees tonight at 6:40 PM.
