The Mount Vernon Police Department is teaming up with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to remind drivers to buckle up during the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The enforcement effort began yesterday and continues through May 31st. Officers will conduct extra patrols focused on seatbelt use and making sure children are properly secured in car seats and booster seats. The overtime patrols are funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Indiana’s Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program. State officials say Indiana has seen a steady decline in deadly crashes involving unbelted passengers since 2021. A recent Purdue University survey found seatbelt use among Hoosiers reached more than 94 percent this year, which is above the national average. Indiana law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts. Children under eight must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat. Drivers can also face citations for passengers under 16 who are not buckled up. Police are also encouraging parents and caregivers to double-check that child safety seats are properly installed and being used correctly.
