Authorities across the country are giving parents a heads up about the latest iPhone update, and how some new software could make it easier for predators to reach victims. The software is called “NameDrop.” It’s meant to quickly share contact information with a nearby iPhone or Apple Watch. The feature is automatically turned on when you download iOS 17.1. All you have to do is hold your phone centimeters away from another person’s updated iPhone and the option to share contact information will appear on both phones. The drop information has to be approved by the phone’s user, however authorities are mostly concerned when it comes to children. Police say scammers, predators, and people with ill-intentions can and will use any information to make you a victim. They suggest turning the feature off to keep you or your children safe. If a NameDrop pops up on your phone, simply move your phone away from others, or lock it before the NameDrop transfer completes. To turn the feature off, police say to go to your general settings, find AirDrop, and then turn off the “Bringing Devices Together” option.
