The University of Evansville is mourning the loss of a student-athlete. Sophomore Jordan Scott, a basketball player for the Purple Aces, died following a weekend crash near Boonville. University officials say Scott had taken a friend home late Sunday night and was driving in an unfamiliar area when her vehicle struck a pole. Scott transferred to Evansville after playing basketball last season at Wabash Valley College. She graduated from Castle High School in 2025. In a statement, U-E Vice President for Athletics Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried said the university is “heartbroken” over Scott’s passing, calling her a beloved member of the Purple Aces family. Siegfried extended his condolences to Scott’s sister and teammate, Jayden, as well as the Scott family, her teammates and coaches. The university says counseling and support resources are being made available to students, student-athletes, faculty and staff affected by Scott’s death. Officials say additional information about opportunities to honor and remember Jordan Scott will be shared with the university community in coordination with her family.
The Mt. Vernon Fire Department is mourning the death of former Fire Chief Roger Waters. The department says Waters dedicated his life to serving the people of Mt. Vernon and the firefighters he worked with. Officials say Waters will be remembered for his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to the community. The fire department is asking the public to keep Waters’ family, friends, and fellow firefighters in their thoughts. Funeral and service arrangements will be announced later.
Mt. Vernon River Days is this weekend in downtown Mt. Vernon. The two-day community festival is set for this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s highlights include the opening ceremony at 11:00 AM, the Smoke on the Ohio Barbecue Competition, live music throughout the day, and a fireworks show at 9:00 PM. Saturday’s events start with the River Days 5K Run at 8:00 AM. Saturday also features a Classic Car Show, a Tractor Display, a Corn Hole Tournament, more Barbecue Competition, and a Talent Show. The festival’s annual parade, which this year is honoring first responders and remembering 9/11, is set for 4:00 PM on Saturday. Live music continues Saturday evening, and the Mt. Vernon River Days concludes at 8:00 PM on Saturday.
The Indiana State Police are currently recruiting new candidates, as well as experienced law enforcement officers looking to make a lateral move to the state police. According to Sergeant Matt Ames, the department is looking for both people interested in beginning a career in law enforcement and officers currently working for other agencies. After completing the application process, lateral candidates will undergo eight weeks of training before being assigned to an Indiana State Police district. New candidates will complete 24 weeks of training, fulfilling the requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Ames says the Indiana State Police also offers officers the opportunity to specialize, with 17 different fields available within the department. Applications are available through the Indiana government website, and the deadline to apply is October 11th.
This Friday is Week 4 of the High School Football season and yesterday the updated Indiana Football Coaches Association rankings were released. North Posey Football, who has started the season 3-0, is ranked 8th in Class 2A. Other area teams that are ranked include Castle at 8th and North 12th in Class 5A. In Class 4A, Reitz is 8th and Heritage Hills is 11th. In Class 3A, Memorial is 1st, Mater Dei 2nd, and Gibson Southern is 5th. Finishing up in 1A, North Daviess is 6th and Springs Valley is 10th.
Tonight, in local high school sports, it’s a busy evening for North Posey and Mt. Vernon teams. North Posey Volleyball is at home vs Mt. Vernon. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match is at 7:00 PM.
North Posey Boys Soccer has a home match vs Boonville at 5:30 PM and Vikings Girls Soccer travels to Boonville at 5:30 PM.
North Posey Boys Tennis welcomes South Spencer at 5:00 PM.
Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer plays host to Mater Dei at 5:30 PM.
Mt. Vernon Girls Golf takes on Signature School on the road at 4:00 PM.
Last night in local college sports, USI Volleyball lost at home to #21 Indiana in four sets. The Hoosiers won the first set, 25-15. Then the Screaming Eagles evened up the match with a 25-22 win in set two. However, IU would take control of the match again and win 25-15 in the third set and 25-14 in the fourth set. USI Volleyball has lost four-straight matches and are 2-5 on the season.
This evening in local college sports, USI Men’s Soccer has a home match vs Bellarmine at 5:00 PM.
