Today is officially 812 Day in Evansville, and several events are planned throughout downtown to celebrate the community. The Mayor’s Office says the day will include the announcement of the 2027 Forward Together GO Grant recipients at 10:30 AM. The grants support projects focused on neighborhood revitalization, literacy and youth wellness. From 3:00 to 5:00 PM, community members can take part in 812 Reads. The event will feature several stations highlighting local resources, including Evansville’s history and archives. And from 2:00 to 6:00 PM, River City Coffee and Goods, 812 Run Club and Young and Established will host the 812 Day Block Party. The celebration will include a live D-J and food trucks, with all of the festivities taking place in downtown Evansville.
Drivers on the west side of Evansville should be prepared for a shift in travel lanes as construction continues. The Indiana Department of Transportation says crews are preparing to shift traffic to allow for construction of new medians and turn lanes. The shifts will occur just west of Posey County Line Road and again just east of Red Bank Road. Westbound traffic will move to the far north lane, while eastbound traffic will use the far south lane. The lane shift is expected to take place late in the week. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert and watch for signs marking the new traffic pattern.
MSD of Mt. Vernon says they are currently hiring substitute teachers. The pay is $125 per day for substitute teachers with a bachelor’s degree, or valid Indiana teacher’s license. Mt. Vernon Junior High School is having tryouts for their volleyball teams this week. This is for any 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student athlete that is interested in playing volleyball this year. All students must have an athletic waiver on file. There is an open gym after school today from 3:15-4:45 PM. Tryouts are tomorrow and Friday after school from 3:15-4:45 PM.
Tonight, in local high school sports, there is just one event on the schedule for North Posey and Mt. Vernon sports. North Posey and Mt. Vernon Girls Golf have a 3-team match with Mater Dei at Helfrich Golf Course at 4:15 PM.
In Major League Baseball on Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals evened up their 3-game series at home vs the Philadelphia Phillies with a 2-0 win. Mason Winn had an RBI-single in the 7th inning and Everson Pereira hit a solo home run in the 8th inning for his 5th of the season. Andre Pallante did not factor into the decision, but he pitched 6 scoreless innings on the mound and allowed only 4 hits. Riley O’Brien nailed down his 30th save. The Cardinals are 60-60 overall and conclude their 3-game set vs the Phillies this afternoon in St. Louis at 1:15 PM.
The Chicago Cubs won the opening game of their 3-game series at the Washington Nationals, 8-6. Chicago blasted 3 home runs in the game. Pete Crow-Armstrong scorched his team-leading 27th home run, Alex Bregman drilled his 13th, and Seiya Suzuki hit his 20th. The Cubs are 8-2 in August and 70-50 on the season. Game 2 of their series at the Nationals is tonight at 5:45 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds scored 3 runs in the 8th inning and 1 run in the 10th inning to take the opening game of a 3-game set at the Chicago White Sox, 5-4. Eugenio Suarez launched his 17th home run in the victory for the Reds. They improve to 57-61 and the White Sox are 61-57. The middle game of the series is this evening in Chicago at 6:40 PM.
