Deaconess Hospital is giving seven high school students a chance to get an inside look at careers in health care. Hospital leaders kicked off a new NAACP Healthcare Apprentice Program Tuesday, bringing students from several area schools into the hospital for real-world experience. The students will shadow nurses and get hands-on exposure to the health care field. Healthcare assistant apprentice Melody Gehlhausen says she’s looking forward to seeing what a nurse does and finding out if it’s a career that fits her interests. Hospital officials say they hope to expand the program and give even more students the opportunity to participate each year.
The Evansville Police Department has officially launched its new Drone as First Responder program. Police say the technology will allow officers to get a view of emergency situations much faster, improving safety for both officers and the public. Officials say a drone can be launched within seconds of a 911 call and provide an aerial view of the scene in as little as 70 seconds. Trained pilots will operate the drones, helping officers assess situations, coordinate resources and determine the safest way to respond. The program was developed with Motorola Solutions and includes a BRINC Responder drone and weatherproof docking station at the Civic Center Complex. The department also has a BRINC LEMUR 2 drone designed for indoor use. Police say it can navigate buildings and confined spaces, allowing officers to assess potentially dangerous areas before entering. Both drones are equipped with zoom and thermal-imaging cameras that can help locate missing people and identify hazards around the clock.
After years of planning, NewLife Rescue & Adoptions is ready to open its new facility in Mount Vernon, and the community is invited to celebrate. A ribbon-cutting is set for noon Saturday, August 29th, kicking off a two-day Grand Opening Adoption Fair from noon to 5 each day at 6500 Leonard Road N. Visitors can tour the new building, meet adoptable animals and enjoy lunch from food trucks. And thanks to the ASPCA, all dog adoptions during the event will have their adoption fees sponsored for families with an approved application. So, it could be a chance to celebrate NewLife’s new home—and maybe take home a new best friend.
