Last night in local high school sports, Mt. Vernon Softball lost in the semi-finals of the Class 3A Sectional 32 vs Memorial, 2-1. The Wildcats only had 2 hits in the game. They led 1-0 in the 5th inning but allowed a run in the 5th inning and 7th inning. Mt. Vernon went 15-7 this year.
North Posey Softball won their semi-final game of the Class 3A Sectional 32 vs Boonville, 11-8. The Vikings trailed 8-7 in the 6th inning but took the lead for good thanks to a 4-run 6th inning. Madison Versteeg went 4-for-4 with 5 RBI to pace North Posey. They improve to 16-14 overall and advance to the Class 3A Sectional 32 Championship Game on Friday. Vikings Softball plays Memorial on Friday at the University of Evansville, with first pitch at 6:00 PM.
This evening, Baseball Sectionals get underway, but Mt. Vernon doesn’t play until tomorrow night. They drew a bye and play Heritage Hills tomorrow evening at 5:00 PM in the semi-finals of the Class 3A Sectional 32 at the University of Evansville. The Wildcats went 12-12 in the regular season. They lost to Heritage Hills 19-3 back on April 23rd. The Patriots are 22-4 on the year.
North Posey Baseball doesn’t play until 5:00 PM Friday night, because they received a bye in the Class 2A Sectional 48 at South Spencer. The Vikings play the winner of South Spencer and Perry Central. North Posey was 14-13 in the regular season.
Authorities in Posey County are warning residents about a phone scam making the rounds. The Posey County Sheriff’s Office says a man has been calling residents using a spoofed phone number while pretending to be Chief Deputy Jeremy Fortune. According to deputies, the caller tells victims they have a bench warrant and threatens arrest if they don’t immediately pay a bond. Sheriff’s officials stress the calls are fraudulent and say the department will never contact citizens by phone about warrants or demand payment. Anyone receiving one of these calls is urged to hang up immediately and avoid sharing personal or financial information.
Several weekly events are returning to Posey County this spring and summer. One of those is the Mount Vernon Market Nights. The first Market Night will be on Monday, June 8th and will continue each Monday evening through July 27th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. There will be food trucks, live music, and entry is free.
Also returning on June 2nd is the Poseyville Farmers Market. Their first market will once again be an extravaganza with a bounce house for kids, barrel train rides, cotton candy and other food as well. The Poseyville Farmers Market will continue on Tuesdays through August.
From Major League Baseball on Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals got shutout in Milwaukee by the Brewers, 6-0. The Cardinals have lost 3-straight games and are 29-24 on the season. They look to avoid a 3-game sweep in Milwaukee this afternoon at 12:40 PM.
The Chicago Cubs lost their 10th-straight game last night as they got beat by the Pirates in Pittsburgh, 12-1. The Cubs have had two different 10-game winning streaks this year and now a 10-game losing streak. They are 29-26 on the year. Game 3 of their 4-game set in Pittsburgh is this evening at 5:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds have taken the first two games from the Mets in New York as they won 7-2 on Tuesday evening. The Reds have won 3-straight games to improve to 29-25 overall. Cincinnati goes for the 3-game sweep tonight at 6:10 PM.
In Chicago, the White fell back to .500 on the season with a 5-3 loss in 11 innings vs the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox are 27-27 and play game 3 of their 4-game series at home vs the Twins this evening at 6:40 PM.
