The Evansville Fire Department has officially released the cause of the fire that destroyed a historic Evansville warehouse in October 2022. In a news release sent by EFD spokesman Mike Larson Friday afternoon, the ATF National Response Team, Columbus Field Division, said the Oct. 17, Morton Avenue blaze was caused by an open flame started by people who were inside the building at the time. Following an investigation of the fire scene, examination of photographs and review of witness statements, the ATF investigators believe the fire started on the third floor, at the east end of the north warehouse, according to the release. The release also states, "It started as the result of open flame ignition to available combustuble material. Although it was reported the fire was set to keep warm, the occupants were not authorized to be inside of the structure at the time of the fire." The occupants are not identified. Evansville Police Sgt. Anna Gray says no charges will be filed, because no victum ever came forward to say people had been told not to enter the structure.
