A Mt. Vernon man is facing charges after police say he assaulted a juvenile and attempted to rob him. According to a press release, on December 22nd officers were called to the 900 block of Walnut Street in reference to an assault. When they arrived, the juvenile victim told them he was approached by a man wearing a ski mask. He says the man demanded money from him, took him to the ground and hit him in the eye. An affidavit shows, the father of the victim saw the suspect driving near the area of the assault and began following him. The father told police that the suspect then wrecked his vehicle around Canal Street and 6th Street, jumped out of his car and ran away. According to a release, police found the vehicle’s owner and were able to identify him as 25-year-old Walter Hampton-Rainey. Police say they found Hampton-Rainey at his home. He told police he was hit by the truck following him and it took off. He also told police he ran from the scene because he was scared that the truck had been following him. Hampton-Rainey proceeded to change his story as the interview continued, according to officials. On December 28th, police say they conducted another interview with Hampton-Rainey at the police station. They say he told them he was ready to tell the truth and further investigation led to his arrest. According to an affidavit, Hampton-Rainey also informed police that he was not the driver of the vehicle. He was booked into the Posey County Jail on the following charges, Attempted Robbery Resulting in Bodily Injury and Battery-Bodily Injury.
