The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a road closure for State Road 66 near Parkers Settlement. Starting this week, crews will close State Road 66 near Parkers Settlement for a bridge replacement. This closure will remove and replace the existing bridge over Rock Bottom Creek. Work to replace the bridge is expected to last through mid-June, depending on the weather. The official detour for this project is State Road 165 to I-64 to State Road 65. Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure.

 

Mt. Vernon High School is having their Free Athletic Physical Night this Wednesday, May 10th, in the high school athletic foyer. This is for both junior high and high school students who are planning to participate in athletics during the 2023-2024 school year. For incoming 9th through 12th grade students, the pre-screening for out of season athletes will start at 5:00 PM. In season athletes should arrive starting at 5:30 PM. There will be no admittance after 6:45 PM. Athletes should bring their entire physical form with them, and they should bring their chromebooks for use during concussion screening. Incoming 7th and 8th grade student athletes should arrive at 7:00 PM. There will be no admittance after 7:30 PM. If you have any questions, you can call the Athletic Office at 812-833-2060.

 

This week is a City-Wide Cleanup Week for the town of Mt. Vernon. Today and Wednesday will be for extra trash. Tuesday and Thursday are for limbs and brush. Then on Friday, it’s appliances and scrap metal. You are to call the street department at 812-838-2352 to schedule a curbside pickup for this week. Dumpsters will also be placed at 232 West 2nd Street across from the Half Moon Saloon, Sawmill Street, which is directly behind Ewing Auto, and at the Street Department Garage which is located at 228 South Kimball Street. It is a one load maximum per household and the city can’t pick up gas, oil, fuel tanks, drums, paint, oil, or batteries.

 

Sports:

  • Evansville Baseball (28-19, 11-10) could not complete their 3-game sweep on Sunday at Illinois State as they fell to the Redbirds, 7-2.

 

  • Evansville Softball (22-31, 8-19) got swept at Northern Iowa in their final regular season series of the year, 9-1. The Aces are the #9 seed in the MVC Tournament in Carbondale this week. They will play #8 seed Drake at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

 

  • USI Baseball (15-32, 6-14) had their series finale at home against Arkansas at Little Rock cancelled yesterday due to rain. The Screaming Eagles lost on Friday and Saturday.

 

  • USI Softball (20-21, 13-9) also had their game cancelled yesterday at Tennessee Tech. The Screaming Eagles won both of their games on Saturday. They play in the OVC Tournament this week at the #3 seed in Oxford, Alabama. USI will get the winner of Tennessee State and Lindenwood on Wednesday at 3:00 PM.

 

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (11-24) snapped an 8-game losing streak with a 12-6 win at home over the Detroit Tigers. Paul Goldschmidt launched 3 home runs for St. Louis.

 

  • The Chicago Cubs (17-17) lost a marathon game in 14 innings at home to the Miami Marlins, 5-4.

 

  • The Cincinnati Reds (14-20) got drilled at home, 17-4 by the Chicago White Sox (12-23). The White Sox scored 11 runs in the 2nd inning.
