Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Elizabeth Baier Youth Spirit Award. The award, in the amount of $500, is given annually to a high school junior who resides in Posey County and who is involved in community activities in Posey County. This award was created in September of 2007 in honor of Elizabeth D. Baier’s 25th Anniversary as Executive Director of the United Way of Posey County. Funding for the award was obtained entirely through private donations. An applicant for the award must be a Posey County resident, but may attend high school in Posey, Gibson, or Vanderburgh counties. They may also be homeschooled. Two or three letters of recommendation must accompany the application. Applications must be typed and must be post-marked no later than April 28th, as award recipients will be notified no later than June 9th. The award for 2023 will be presented at a United Way of Posey County Leadership Giving Recognition event.

 

Indiana DNR has announced Free Fishing Days for 2023. According to Indiana DNR’s website, on Free Fishing Days, Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish the state’s public waters. Officials note all other rules such as seasons, bag and size limits apply. Officials say this year’s Free Fishing Days are May 7th, June 3rd through the 4th and September 23rd. DNR says whether someone is fishing for dinner or a new thrill, a free fishing day is their chance to get on the water. 

 

Officials with the University of Evansville say they, along with city leaders, are going to make a major economic and community development announcement today. It’s planned to happen at noon at Eykamp Hall on UE’s campus. Officials say President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, Evansville Regional Economic Partnership CEO Tara Barney, and Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Corporation Superintendent Dr. David Smith will all be at the announcement.

 

If you are a resident of Vanderburgh County and have any electronics that you need to get rid of, you can recycle them this Saturday in Evansville. The Vanderburgh County Solid Waste District will sponsor Electronics Recycling this Saturday in the Civic Center parking lot at Ninth and Walnut streets. You will be able to recycle your electronics from 8:00 AM until Noon. They say you must be a resident of Vanderburgh County to participate. Appliances will not be accepted and items from businesses will also not be accepted. For more information, you can contact the Solid Waste District at 812-436-7800.

 

The Evansville Fire Department's latest firefighter of the year was named on Wednesday. EFD Captain Jon Grubb was named the Green River Kiwanis’ 2022 Firefighter of the Year during the nonprofit organizations meeting on Wednesday morning. Grubb is a 25-year veteran of the department, and has been assigned to the Rescue 3 since 2010. As firefighter of the year, Captain Grubb received a wall plaque from Kiwanis, a $100 check from "On the Spot" Utility Resources LLC., an evening out from Evansville Firefighters Credit Union and a Firefighter of the year Ring from Firefighters Local 357. The Green River Kiwanis will also erect a billboard with Captain Grubb's picture, proclaiming his accomplishment. The location of the billboard, courtesy of Lamar Advertising, will be placed and announced in the coming month. Grubb is the 41st recipient of the annual award.

 

It's Opening Day across Major League Baseball today as the St. Louis Cardinals open at home against the Toronto Blue Jays at 3:10 PM. Miles Mikolas is the opening day starter on the mound for St. Louis. 106.7 FM WMVI will be your radio home once again for Cardinals Baseball all season long. Other Opening Day games of note, the Chicago Cubs will be at home against the Milwaukee Brewers at 1:20 PM. The Cincinnati Reds welcome the Pittsburgh Pirates at 3:10 PM and the Chicago White Sox are in Houston to battle the Astros at 6:08 pm.

 

Sports:

- Mt. Vernon Baseball lost at Central, 14-0

- North Posey Baseball fell at Owensboro Catholic, 4-3

- Mt. Vernon Softball beat Mater Dei on the road, 9-4

- Evansville Baseball (16-8) saw their 9-game winning streak come to an end with a 10-4 loss at home against SEMO

- The Indiana Pacers (33-44) got beat at home by the Milwaukee Bucks, 149-136. Bennedict Mathurin had 29 points and 9 rebounds.
