Construction Safety Week is being celebrated across the country this week. BMWC Constructors is a founding member of Construction Safety Week and has been an active participant. This year they celebrated at the SABIC Facility in Mount Vernon. The employees of SABIC were treated to lunch as both BMWC and SABIC LEADERS spoke on safety topics like helmet use, mental health, and emphasized this week’s motto ‘Strong Voices, Safe Choices’. Officials say a raffle was held at the end of the event and $5,000 that was raised went to Tri-State Food Bank. A Tri-State Food Bank official says that money could make up to 30,000 meals.

 

The Town of Poseyville will have the large pick-up day on Friday, May 12th for Poseyville residents. If you have items for the town to be picked up, please put the items at the curb and they will be picked up between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Keep in mind though that no tires, refrigerators, freezers with refrigeration, fuel, paint, or TV’s will be picked up.

 

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a road closure for State Road 66 near Parkers Settlement. Starting on or around Monday, May 8, crews will close State Road 66 near Parkers Settlement for a bridge replacement. This closure will remove and replace the existing bridge over Rock Bottom Creek. Work to replace the bridge is expected to last through mid-June, depending on the weather. The official detour for this project is State Road 165 to I-64 to State Road 65. Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure.

 

The Mt. Vernon M-Club posted on Facebook Monday, an invitation for the public to get pre-registered for the Posey County Poker run. It will take place on July 22nd. This is a fundraiser to help the youth in the community get scholarships to any Mt. Vernon Youth Camp they would like to attend. If you pre-register, the cost is 15 dollars per person. The pre-registration ends on May 15th and after that date the cost will be 20 dollars per person. You can visit the Mt. Vernon M-Club Facebook page for more information.

 

USI Men's Basketball announced the signing of 6-foot-1 guard Luther Smith, Jr. and 6-foot-2 guard Jordan Tillmon for the 2023-24 season. Smith and Tillmon are the first to sign with USI and Head Coach Stan Gouard this spring. Smith comes to USI from Sussex Hamilton High School (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) where he earned first-team All-Greater Metro Conference as a junior and senior. He averaged 27.8 points per game last year as a senior.
 
Tillmon joins the Eagles after spending the 2022-23 season with Florida A&M University where he posted 10.6 points, 2.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds in 34.8 minutes per contest. Prior to last season at Florida A&M, Tillmon was first team All-Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference during his two seasons at Connors State College.

  • Mt. Vernon Baseball (3-12) lost at home against North Posey (12-6) by a score of 14-9.

 

  • Mt. Vernon Softball (10-8) fell at home 3-2 vs Princeton.  

 

  • USI Baseball (15-29) got thumped in Carbondale by the Salukis of SIU, 14-3.

 

  • USI Softball (18-21) was shutout at home by Austin Peay, 8-0.  

 

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (10-20) lost another series opener at home against the Los Angeles Angles, 5-1.

 

  • The Chicago Cubs (15-14) got tripped up in Washington by the Nationals, 4-1.  

 

  • The Chicago White Sox (9-21) walked off the Minnesota Twins in 10 innings, 3-2.
