Mount Vernon Wildcats VS Gibson Southern 09-04-26
The Mount Vernon Wildcats showed major improvement Friday night, particularly in the first half, but Gibson Southern pulled away after halftime for a 59-19 victory at Jewel Field.
Mount Vernon went toe-to-toe with the Titans through much of the opening half, scoring three times through the air and heading to the locker room trailing 38-19. The Wildcats were held scoreless after halftime, while Gibson Southern added 21 points to put the game away.
Quarterback Johnathon Crowe completed 13 of 24 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Lilleston was the big-play threat for Mount Vernon, hauling in nine passes for 212 yards and accounting for all three Wildcat touchdowns.
On the ground, Saint Henderson led Mount Vernon with 64 yards on 11 carries. Eastin Hall carried 13 times for 27 yards, while Hunter Anslinger added five yards on two attempts.
Mount Vernon finished with 327 yards of total offense on 51 plays — 232 through the air and 95 on the ground.
Gibson Southern piled up 564 yards of offense, including 337 passing and 227 rushing. The Titans scored five touchdowns through the air and three on the ground.
Peyton Johnson led the Gibson Southern receiving corps with 12 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Ortiz added six receptions for 86 yards and two scores. Eli Foster led the Titans on the ground with 101 yards on 18 carries.
Gibson Southern led 38-19 at halftime before Foster scored on a two-yard run with 8:42 remaining in the third quarter. Johnson added a 14-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth, and Makade Malone finished the scoring with a 51-yard touchdown run to make it 59-19.
