Mount Vernon Wildcats VS South Spencer 09-11-26

The Mount Vernon Wildcats fell on the road Friday night as the South Spencer Rebels picked up their first victory of the season, 35-6.

South Spencer scored on its opening possession when Michael Stratford caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Jaycek Miller. Harbin Emmick added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Mount Vernon answered on the final play of the first quarter when Eastin Hall scored on a four-yard run. A bad snap on the extra-point attempt left the Rebels ahead 7-6.

The second quarter proved to be the difference.

Cash McCaffery returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-6. Tre Lance then broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run, followed by a Miller pass to Logan Neighbors for the two-point conversion and a 21-6 lead.

Lance added his second touchdown on a one-yard run with 4:21 remaining in the half. Miller again found Neighbors for the two-point conversion, making it 29-6.

South Spencer capped the half with another defensive score as Miller returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown with 1:02 remaining. That gave the Rebels a 35-6 halftime advantage, and neither team scored in the second half.

Despite the final score, Mount Vernon actually outgained South Spencer. The Wildcats ran 49 plays for 247 yards, compared to 233 yards on 52 plays for the Rebels.

Hall led Mount Vernon with 107 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. The Wildcats finished with 94 rushing yards and 153 passing yards. Ryan Lilleston caught two passes for 99 yards, Cael Collins had four catches for 20 yards and Clayton Hamilton added two receptions for 27 yards.

Turnovers were the biggest difference. Mount Vernon threw four interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, lost two fumbles and failed to recover two kickoffs.

South Spencer's Lance finished with 92 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Miller and Jayden Sarver combined to complete 13 of 20 passes for 134 yards.

The loss drops Mount Vernon as the Wildcats turn their attention to next Friday night, when they return home to face Princeton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
