Two men are facing drug charges after Mt. Vernon police say an online tip submitted just minutes after a social media post led officers to suspected drug activity at a local home. According to a police report, officers were notified Tuesday by Posey County Probation that 61-year-old Johnnie Wyatt Junior was wanted on a felony warrant out of Marion County. The warrant stems from a petition to revoke probation in a robbery case involving serious bodily injury. Around the same time, Mt. Vernon police promoted a new online tip submission tool on the city’s website. Police say about 15 minutes after that post, they received a tip alleging drug activity at Wyatt’s home in the Kimball Street area. Officers went to the residence and confirmed the warrant was active. Police say Wyatt attempted to run into another room while being escorted to the restroom, leading to a physical struggle before officers handcuffed him. A detective later entered the home to check on officers and wake up Wyatt’s friend, identified as 56-year-old Marion Overton. According to police, the detective spotted a glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue in the living room. After Wyatt declined to give officers permission to search the home, police obtained a search warrant from Posey County Circuit Court. During the search, officers say they found baggies, a plastic capsule, and a glass bong containing suspected methamphetamine, along with drug paraphernalia and marijuana. Both Wyatt and Overton were booked into the Posey County Jail on charges of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Wyatt also faces charges of resisting law enforcement and maintaining a common nuisance.
A Mt. Vernon man has been arrested on an animal cruelty charge after police say he shot at his neighbor’s cat with a BB gun. According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, officers were called to the 1100 block of Third Street on October 2nd after a report that a neighbor had shot the caller’s daughter’s cat. Police say 70-year-old Jeffery Pope partially stepped outside his home, aimed a BB gun at the eight-year-old cat, and fired, causing the animal to jump and run away. According to police, Pope admitted to shooting at the cat, saying he was frustrated because it had been defecating in his yard and damaging the underside of his house. Police also say Pope told them he planned to get traps that would kill the cats. Pope was arrested on Saturday on a warrant issued three days earlier for animal cruelty.
Posey County fire officials are gathering public input on a proposal to create a countywide fire department. More than 40 residents attended the two public forums held over the weekend to discuss the proposal. Officials told residents that the county’s eight fire departments responded to more than 2,100 calls last year. But staffing shortages and funding challenges have made it increasingly difficult for departments to respond to emergencies. Officials say having paid firefighters stationed in firehouses could help crews get on the road more quickly.
