News:
Residents in Posey County weighed in on the proposed data center development again last night. The Posey County Area Plan Commission spent several hours reviewing an ordinance governing data centers before unanimously approving it. The hearing was a continuation of last week’s meeting, which was paused after hours of discussion. The nearly 40-page ordinance establishes requirements for data centers, including limits on height, noise, setbacks and size. It also requires developers to submit plans addressing utility use, construction and potential environmental impacts. Commission president Joseph Marvel says many of the provisions are designed to protect nearby properties, especially residential areas. The proposal is believed to be connected to Amazon, although officials say the company is still in the early stages of considering a data center in Posey County. An attorney representing Amazon Web Services told the commission the company has made several changes to its proposal. Residents also had an opportunity to speak during the hearing, with dozens attending in red shirts to voice their opposition. The commission’s action is a recommendation. The ordinance will now go before the Posey County Commissioners for consideration. Data centers have become an increasingly prominent development issue across the Tri-State, with similar projects being proposed or approved in several communities.

Black Township Fire and Rescue officials and the Posey County Fire Steering Committee are inviting residents to learn more about a proposal to create a countywide fire department. Officials say fire departments across the country are facing growing challenges, including fewer volunteers, increasing call volumes, higher equipment and operating costs, and greater training and administrative demands. Posey County currently has eight fire departments serving 419 square miles and about 25,200 residents. In 2025, those departments responded to approximately 2,150 calls. Fire officials say staffing shortages, differences in funding and the demands of maintaining separate administrative systems have raised questions about the long-term sustainability of the county's all-volunteer fire service. The proposed countywide department would look at ways to coordinate staffing, training and resources while creating a unified leadership structure. Officials stress the proposal is not intended to diminish the work of volunteer firefighters or erase local traditions. Instead, they say, volunteers would remain an essential part of the fire service. Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts about the future of emergency services in Posey County. Three public meetings are scheduled. The first will be October 10th at 1:00 PM at St. Peter's on the Hill. Another meeting will be held October 10th at 3:00 PM at the Hovey House. And the third meeting is October 11th at 1:00 PM at Ribeye Gym. Residents are encouraged to attend and learn more about the proposal.
