The University of Southern Indiana Board of Trustees has approved a $185.6 million operating budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The action came during the Board's regular meeting Thursday. University officials say the budget is funded primarily through tuition and fees, along with state appropriations. Trustees also approved miscellaneous fees, reviewed the schedule of mandatory student fees for the upcoming academic year, authorized the distribution of financial aid awards, and received an update on construction projects currently underway across campus.
Regional leaders gathered Thursday to talk about the power of working together. The Evansville Regional Economic Partnership, or E-REP, hosted its annual Lunch with the Mayors, with this year's theme centered on the role of art in shaping communities. Mayors from Evansville, Henderson, Princeton and Mount Vernon highlighted progress made over the past year, including Evansville Fire's transition to EMS services, corporate partnerships, the ongoing I-69 project and new development in Henderson. The group also discussed challenges facing the region, including rising energy costs in Evansville and the need for more housing throughout the area. Looking ahead, the mayors said they'll continue focusing on economic development, expanding housing opportunities and finding ways to attract and retain residents across their communities.
The City of Evansville is turning to solar power in an effort to cut energy costs and reduce its environmental impact. Over the next four years, the city plans to install solar panels on nearly 20 municipal buildings, including Swonder Ice Arena and Mesker Park Zoo. The $6.5 million project is expected to reduce the city's annual electric bill by more than one-third. Officials say the upfront cost will be covered by the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility, with the city repaying that investment over six years using energy savings and federal tax credits. They say the project is designed to pay for itself without affecting the city's operating budget. City leaders say the solar initiative is another step toward modernizing municipal operations and meeting Evansville's long-term goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
