Indiana veterans with service-connected disabilities could soon see significant property tax relief under a new state law. Governor Mike Braun recently ceremonially signed House Enrolled Act 1210, a measure supported by area lawmakers that expands tax benefits for disabled veterans. The new law allows veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability rating to deduct the full assessed value of their primary residence from property taxes. That replaces the current $14,000 deduction and means qualifying veterans will pay no property taxes on their homes. The legislation also replaces several existing veteran property tax deductions with credits that will be applied directly to a veteran's property tax bill beginning with the 2026 assessment year. State Representative Tim O'Brien of Evansville says the law broadens tax relief opportunities for veterans through new and expanded credits. Those include a $250 credit for partially disabled veterans age 62 and older with at least a 10 percent disability rating, and a $350 credit for veterans who served during wartime. State Representative Wendy McNamara of Evansville estimates the measure will provide more than $46 million in additional tax relief for veterans across Indiana, with the benefits beginning on taxes payable in 2027.

A new report from United Way of Indiana finds that more than one million Hoosier households are struggling to afford basic necessities as everyday costs continue to rise faster than inflation. The report shows growing financial strain on households experiencing poverty, or are ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed. The organization's latest State of ALICE report shows that 38 percent of Indiana households are either living in poverty or fall into the ALICE category. The report tracks the costs of essential needs, including housing, childcare, food, transportation, health care, and technology. Researchers say many ALICE families earn too much to qualify for public assistance but still can't afford the true cost of living. According to the report, a family of four with two adults, an infant, and a preschooler needed more than $74,000 in 2024 to cover basic living expenses in Indiana. That's more than double the federal poverty level for a family of that size. The report also argues that the federal poverty measure is outdated because it does not account for regional differences in living costs and relies on a formula developed in the 1960s. United Way leaders say the findings highlight the growing financial challenges facing working families across Indiana.
