Tonight is graduation night here in Posey County and both high schools will be celebrating with their  graduation ceremonies.  The MSD of Mount Vernon will have their ceremony tonight at 7:00.  That will take place in the gymnasium.  Doors will open at 6:00 and the public is asked to enter through door number 2.  North Posey will have their ceremony tonight as well.  That will be in their gymnasium beginning at 7:30.  Congratulations to all graduates from your friends here at Posey County Radio.

Memorial Day is coming up on Monday and American Legion Post 278 will be holding a Memorial Day Service at 11:25 at the Poseyville Cemetery.  This event will include members of the Auxiliary Squadron 278 and Scouting Troop 287.  Any veteran that would like to participate is welcome to come and be recognized.  If it is raining, the event will be moved to the Poseyville Community Center on Church Street.

The Mount Vernon Fraternal Order of the Eagles will be hosting a Memorial Day cookout this Saturday.  They invite the public to come out around noon with several other events taking place throughout the day.

The Posey County Democratic Club is hosting a meet and mingle event tomorrow at their headquarters located at 217 West 3rd Street in Mount Vernon.  The event will take place from 10:30 until noon.  It will be an open house event with light refreshments.  The public will be able to hear remarks from candidates running in the upcoming election.

A former Posey County Solid Waste employee is heading to prison after admitting to stealing more than $25,000 from the county. The Posey County Prosecutor’s Office says 46 year old Jennifer Tinsley was sentenced to two years with the Indiana Department of Correction. Under the sentence, she’ll serve the first six months in prison, with the remainder on Posey County Community Corrections. According to officials, Tinsley pleaded guilty to stealing funds from Posey County Solid Waste while employed there during 2023 and 2024. Investigators with the Indiana State Police and the Indiana State Board of Accounts say Tinsley received more than $21,000 in unauthorized checks, along with more than $4,500 in fraudulent payroll checks. Authorities say the total loss amounted to just over $25,850. Court records show Tinsley admitted to investigators that she forged vendor and payroll checks written to herself. Officials say following the sentencing hearing, Tinsley was immediately taken into custody by the Posey County Sheriff’s Office to begin serving her sentence. 

The Mount Vernon Police Department is looking to hire two new officers. Department officials say they are seeking motivated individuals ready to serve the community. Applications will be accepted through June 18th, with testing tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 30th at 4:00 PM. Starting salary is more than 61,000 dollars per year, with additional pay after probation or successful completion of field training. The department also offers longevity pay increases, a qualifying lateral transfer bonus, shift differential pay, and take-home vehicles. Benefits include vacation, personal and sick days, along with health, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage. Required duty equipment, including body armor and weapons, is also provided. Applications can be completed in person or downloaded online through the Mt. Vernon Police Department page on the city’s website.

Several weekly events are returning to Posey County this spring and summer.  One of those is the Mount Vernon Market Nights.  The first Market Night will be on Monday June 8th and will continue each Monday evening through July 27th from 5:00 until 8:00. There will be food trucks, live music, and entry is free.

Also returning on June 2nd is the Poseyville Farmers Market.  Their first market will once again be an extravaganza with a bounce house for kids, barrel train rides, cotton candy and other food as well.  The Poseyville Farmers Market will continue on Tuesdays through August. 

Sports:

Taking a look at high school sports from yesterday.  Girls Tennis sectionals finally got under way after being delayed by the rain on Wednesday.  In round one Mount Vernon took on Central.  The Bears defeated the Wildcats 5 - 0 to close out the Wildcats season.

Mount Vernon and North Posey Boys Golf competed last night along with North.  North came away with the win at 163 strokes.  Mount Vernon came in second in the match with 166 and North Posey had 177.  Mount Vernon's Senior Brennan Austin was the medalist in his final match at the Western Hills Country Club with a score of 39.  Sophomore Jake Carlisle carded 42, Freshman Chase Byerly had 42.  Preston Russell and Nathan Craig carded 43 and Senior Reese Harshbarger carded 44.  The Vikings were led in scoring by Ethan Bittner, who shot 41. Camden Koester carded a 42. Josh Freeman posted a 43 and Porter Seibert rounded out the team scoring with a 51. 

The Mount Vernon Wildcats Baseball team took on Norris City in a double header.  In the first game the Wildcats  took the win with a 4 to 3 score.  The Wildcats had 9 hits and 2 errors in the first game.  In game two Mount Vernon recorded 11 hits and no errors taking the victory with an 11 to 1 final score.  They will play again tomorrow as they host the Mount Vernon Invite.  That will begin at 9AM as they take on North Knox.  Game 2 will be Boonville VS Vincennes with the championship games to follow.

The North Posey Vikings Baseball team competed last night at the University of Evansville taking on the Memorial Tigers.  The Vikings had 4 hits with no errors in a 2 to 1 loss.  That game concludes the regular season for the Vikings with Sectional 48 play beginning next Friday at South Spencer.  They will play the winner of South Spencer and Perry Central who play next Wednesday.

The Mount Vernon Wildcats Softball team closed out their regular season last night against the Reitz Panthers.  Mount Vernon had 11 hits and 3 errors in a 6 to 3 victory.  That closes out their regular season with a 15 and 6 record.  The Wildcats begin sectional play next Tuesday at 5 PM at the University of Evansville.  They drew the bye in the first round and will take on the winner of Memorial and Bosse who play on Monday.  Posey County Radio will bring you the live coverage of the playoffs on 106.7 WMVI.

And the North Posey Lady Vikings Softball team wrapped up their regular season last night taking on Washington at home.  The final in that game was 7 to nothing in favor of North Posey.  That places the Vikings at 14 and 14 on the regular season with Sectional play beginning on Monday at the University of Evansville as they take on the 7 and 15 Central Bears.  Posey County Radio will have live coverage of that game on 98.9 WPIW.
