Toyota Indiana marked its 30th anniversary Thursday by announcing $330,000 in grants aimed at youth development and STEM education in southwestern Indiana. The automaker first broke ground in Princeton three decades ago with about 1,300 employees. Today, the plant employs nearly 8,000 workers who build three Toyota models and one Lexus model. The facility has produced more than 8 million vehicles since opening. Among the new grants, the University of Evansville and North Gibson School Corporation will receive funding through Toyota’s Driving Possibilities Initiative to purchase vehicles for STEM and career-training programs. Toyota also pledged $200,000 to Mudpuppy Palace for the first phase of a nature-based learning center focused on STEAM education activities. Additional funding will support improvements at Camp Carson, operated by the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana in Gibson County. The anniversary celebration follows Toyota’s recent announcement of a 200-million-dollar investment to expand production of the Grand Highlander at the Princeton plant. Over the past 30 years, Toyota says it has invested more than 8.2 billion dollars in its Indiana operations and donated more than 55 million dollars to regional organizations. Toyota Indiana President Jason Puckett credited employees for the company’s long-term success, calling team members the “true heart” of the operation.

The National Association of Letter Carriers and Tri-State Food Bank are once again teaming up for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The event, now in its 34th year, is recognized as the nation’s largest one-day food drive and encourages residents to donate shelf-stable food items to help families in need. Officials say community members can take part by leaving non-perishable food donations in or next to their mailbox before mail delivery on Saturday. Letter carriers will collect the donations along their regular routes. All donated food will be distributed by Tri-State Food Bank to local pantries, shelters and feeding programs throughout its 33-county service area in southern Illinois, southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky.
