Indiana Department of Transportation officials say lane closures are set to begin this week on State Road 62 in Posey County. The closures will affect State Road 62 from the Indiana state line to Herman Island Road. INDOT says the closures are needed for work on the Wabash River Bridge. Crews will make bridge deck and truss repairs, along with painting the bridge. The project is expected to continue through January of 2028, depending on weather conditions. One lane of traffic will remain open through the work zone, with a temporary traffic signal controlling traffic. INDOT is reminding drivers to slow down, use extra caution, and avoid distractions when traveling through or near the construction zone.
An upcoming blood drive in Posey County is set to make history while honoring the memory of a beloved community member. The American Red Cross says the “Love Like Abi” blood drive this Wednesday has already set an all-time Posey County record, with 140 donors signed up. The event will be held on what would have been the birthday of Abi Williams, who died at age 39 on January 28th, 2023, following a nine-month battle with breast cancer. Abi leaves behind her husband, Brian Williams, and their two young children, Cooper and Bristol. Brian, who serves on the school board and manages the I-G-A grocery store in Mount Vernon, began organizing “Love Like Abi” blood drives after his wife’s death. So far, “Love Like Abi” blood drives have collected 626 units of blood, potentially helping as many as 1,878 people. The record-setting blood drive is scheduled for this Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon.
Last week, Amazon said it’s in the early stages of deciding whether to develop a data center in Posey County. An Amazon spokesperson says that if the company moves forward, the project will go through a full public review process. The company says it plans to work with residents and local officials to understand community priorities and address concerns. The statement came as the Posey County Area Plan Commission held a public hearing last Thursday on proposed changes to the county’s unified development ordinance. Much of the public comment focused on new regulations for data center construction. Amazon’s Attorney, Mike Schopmeyer, told the commission Amazon is no longer considering its initial proposed location. He says the company is now looking at a more industrial site closer to major highways. Schopmeyer also said Amazon will not apply for permits or begin work until the county’s ordinance process is complete. He argued the proposed amendments are overly restrictive and need to be more balanced. Schopmeyer said Amazon’s plans are still in the early stages, and community outreach could begin in about a month. There is another public hearing this Thursday at 5:30 PM at Hovey House in Mt. Vernon.
