Week 3 of the High School Football season is tonight, and the Mt. Vernon Wildcats welcome the Pike Central Chargers for a 6:30 PM kickoff. It is homecoming night for the Wildcats. Mt. Vernon is 1-1 on the year and Pike Central is 2-0 after beating Clarksville and Tecumseh. Chris Cooke and Allen Buck will have the radio broadcast on 106.7 FM WMVI and online at poseycountyradio.com. The pregame show begins at 6:15 PM.

The North Posey Vikings play their first road game at the South Spencer Rebels this evening at 7:00 PM. The Vikings are 2-0 on the season and ranked 4th in the Class 2A Coaches poll. South Spencer is 1-1 on the year after beating Tecumseh in week 1 and losing to Mt. Vernon last week. Jordan Fisher and Chris Morlan will bring you the radio broadcast on 98.9 FM WPIW and online at poseycountyradio.com. The pregame show starts at 6:45 PM.

Mount Vernon Police have made an arrest in an arson investigation. They say a home was set on fire Tuesday, and 47-year-old Quinyatte Harrell was named a suspect. Police say they found him at the Mount Vernon riverfront. They say he was taken to the police department and eventually confessed to setting the fire on purpose with the intent of destroying the home. Nobody else was there at the time. Harrell is in jail charged with arson and criminal recklessness.

 

Card skimmers have been discovered in Mount Vernon, according to police. The Mount Vernon Police Department is providing tips to avoid getting tricked. They say to first do a quick scan of the machine to see if it’s been tampered with. Officers also say to be cautious of non-bank ATMs, since they are more likely to be tampered with. People are being asked to report any suspicious activity you see to the police department. Finally, they say to check your bank account regularly. This way, if you did become a victim, you will know as soon as possible.

 

Posey County Emergency Management says that due to the lack of rain in the county, the burn ban for Posey County has been extended until September 17th. The burn ban has been in effect since August 27th. If the ban is lifted before then, Posey County Emergency Management says they will post it on their Facebook page. Sports:

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball earned a win at Heritage Hills in straight sets. The Vikings improve to 8-3 on the year.

Mt. Vernon Volleyball got beat at home against Reitz in straight sets. The Wildcats slip to 2-6 on the season.

Wildcats Boys Tennis lost at Gibson Southern, 5-0.

Mt. Vernon Girls Golf was at home on Thursday, as they took on Mt. Carmel and Princeton. Mt. Carmel won the match with a team score of 155. The Wildcats finished with a score of 213 and Princeton put together a team score of 230. Libby Reese paced Mt. Vernon as she shot a 42.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals were off on Thursday. They return home tonight to start a 3-game weekend series against the Seattle Mariners at 7:15 PM. The Cardinals are 71-69 on the season and currently 5 games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League. Right now the Braves and Mets are tied for the last spot. The Chicago Cubs are also in the mix as they sit 4 games back.

The Chicago Cubs enjoyed yesterday off as well. They are home today and begin a 3-game series with the New York Yankees at 1:20 PM. Chicago is 72-68.

The Cincinnati Reds finished off a 3-game sweep of the Houston Astros at home on Thursday, 1-0. Cincy improves to 68-73. The Reds hit the road to face the New York Mets for a 3-game set this evening at 6:10 PM.
