The America 250 Lantern is in Posey County today. It’s a replica of the historic lantern that commemorates Paul Revere’s famous ride and the events that helped shape our nation’s history. This special lantern is traveling across all 92 Indiana counties as part of the America 250 Indiana celebration. The event is free and all ages are welcome. It’s from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM today at Poseyville Carnegie Public Library. You can also catch it from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Alexandrian Public Library. Then, tomorrow it makes its way to the Workingmen’s Institute in New Harmony from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

 

The Indiana State Police Evansville District welcomed their new Public Information Officer over the weekend. Sgt. Seth Rainey takes over the position following the retirement of Sgt. Todd Ringle, who concluded a law enforcement career spanning more than 40 years. Rainey brings more than a decade of experience with the Evansville District, serving as both a state trooper and K-9 handler. Sgt. Rainey officially assumed the duties of Public Information Officer yesterday.

 

A popular summertime attraction is back at Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari. The theme park says its drone and fireworks spectacular, "Holidays in the Sky," returned Saturday night. The show features 500 synchronized drones lighting up the sky, with some drones carrying pyrotechnics as part of the display. Holiday World describes the event as an unforgettable nighttime experience for guests. "Holidays in the Sky" is scheduled to run through August 3rd, providing 45 nights of drones and fireworks, weather permitting.

 

Black Township Fire and Rescue is inviting local teens to get a firsthand look at what it takes to be a firefighter during its annual Kids Summer Camp next month. The two-day camp is open to youth ages 12 to 17 and will be held July 23rd and 24th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day at Black Township Fire and Rescue Station 1 on Industrial Road in Mount Vernon. Participants will receive hands-on training in a variety of emergency response skills, including fire safety, fire suppression techniques, CPR and first aid, hazardous materials response, rescue operations, and the use of firefighting equipment. Organizers say the camp is designed to teach teamwork, leadership, and the basics of emergency services in a fun and educational environment. The cost is ten dollars per camper, and lunch will be provided both days. Registration is required by July 1st, and space is limited. We are a little less than one month away from the 2026 Posey County Fair at the Posey County Fairgrounds. This year’s Posey County Fair is July 13th-18th with a few pre-fair events on July 11th and 12th. This summer, the Poseyville Police Department is hosting a babysitter training class on Thursday, July 16th from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Poseyville Community Center. The course is offered for middle school and high school aged students. It’s a chance for students to learn CPR/AED skills and become a lifesaver at home, in the workplace, and in the community. The cost is ten dollars per participant and spots are limited. You can register by emailing charles.carter@poseyville.us.

 

Over the weekend, the High School Baseball Season came to an end with the IHSAA Baseball State Finals at Victory Field in Indianapolis. On Saturday in the Class 2A Championship Game, Mater Dei won their first Baseball State Championship since 1999 with a 6-3 win in 8 innings vs Bluffton. The Wildcats ended their championship season with a 30-3 record.

In the Class 1A Championship Game that was played on Friday evening, Northeast Dubois lost to Kouts, 2-0. Northeast Dubois finishes as Class 1A runner-up and 23-6 overall.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals were able to salvage a game in their 3-game series at the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, 12-10. The Cardinals had 16 hits in the game as JJ Wetherholt, Ivan Herrera, and Alec Burleson all had 3-hit games. Wetherholt launched two home runs, which gives him 12 on the year. Herrera belted his 10th home run of the season and Mason Winn cracked his 3rd home run of the year. St. Louis ends their 3-game losing streak and improves to 41-34. They are back home tonight to begin a 4-game series vs the Arizona Diamondbacks at 6:45 PM.

In Chicago, the Cubs had their game with the Toronto Blue Jays postponed. The Cubs are 40-37 overall and start a 4-game set at the New York Mets this evening at 6:10 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Yankees on the road, 4-1 and won 2-of-3 in the series. Tyler Stephenson walloped his 6th home run of the year. The Reds are 37-39 overall and welcome the Milwaukee Brewers tonight for a 3-game series at 6:10 PM.

The Chicago White Sox lost in Detroit vs the Tigers, 5-4 in 10 innings. The White Sox were swept in the 3-game set and went 1-5 on their 6-game road trip. They are 39-37 on the season and return home to face the Cleveland Guardians in a 3-game set this evening at 6:40 PM.
