News:
Dangerous heat is settling over the Tri-State this week, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 111 degrees. The National Weather Service says afternoon highs will stay in the upper 90s through Thursday, but the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel much hotter. Heat index values are expected to reach around 109 today, 110 on Tuesday, peak at 111 on Wednesday, and remain near 110 on Thursday. The American Red Cross is urging everyone to take precautions during the extreme heat. Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty, limit time outdoors, and take frequent breaks in air conditioning. It's also important to check on elderly neighbors, family members and anyone without reliable cooling, and watch for signs of heat-related illness. Pet owners are also reminded to make sure animals have plenty of fresh water and access to shade.
An Evansville woman will spend the next 20 years in prison after being sentenced on drug dealing charges in Posey County. 44-year-old Lori Ann Reynolds was sentenced last Wednesday after being found guilty of dealing methamphetamine, along with possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. The charges stem from an incident in October of last year, when police responded to a report of a woman acting erratically in a vehicle parked at a gas station. Reynolds told officers she had run out of gas, but investigators believed she was under the influence of a controlled substance. Police say a K-9 alerted to the vehicle, leading officers to find more than 130 grams of methamphetamine and a handgun inside the car. Reynolds had faced a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, before receiving the 20-year sentence.
Burdette Park's Aquatic Center reopens this morning at 10:00 AM after crews made significant progress cleaning up from recent flooding. While the Olympic pool, splash park and back water slides will be open, the family pool and baby pool remain closed. Park officials say all mud and debris have been removed, but the water must still undergo routine testing before those pools can safely reopen. They say it's the same testing process used at the start of every swimming season. Officials hope to collect water samples by Wednesday morning. Because of the limited attractions available, discounted admission will be offered today and Tuesday.
Posey County residents, if they haven’t already, will soon receive emergency alerts through a new notification system. The Posey County Emergency Management Agency is switching from CodeRED to Rave Alert. The new system will continue providing critical weather warnings and other emergency notifications to residents across the county. As officials transfer contact information into the new platform, some residents may receive an email from Rave Alert asking them to confirm their email address. Emergency Management officials say those emails are legitimate and are not a scam. The EMA also apologized for any confusion the unexpected emails may have caused during the transition. Anyone who is not currently signed up for emergency alerts is encouraged to register with the new Rave Alert system to receive future weather warnings and emergency notifications.
