On Saturday at around 3:40 AM, a Mt. Vernon Police Department officer performed an Arkansas license plate check on a gray GMC Terrain. The vehicle was confirmed as stolen from Jonesboro, Arkansas. Just as the officers began to call the occupants out of the vehicle, the driver accelerated eastbound on Old Highway 62. Officers pursued the vehicle onto Leonard Road, to Lower Mt. Vernon and eventually onto Indian Mounds Road. As the vehicle traveled north on Indian Mounds Road, it failed to negotiate a curve, lost control and left the roadway. The SUV drove through the grass, rolled over and ended up on its side in the lake. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 19-year-old Joshua Caines of Jonesboro, Arkansas, emerged from the water, ran up the bank and started to flee on foot northbound toward a wooded area. A 17-year-old passenger from Jonesboro, Arkansas was detained by officers after he emerged from the water. Deputies from the Posey County Sheriff's Office arrived and helped set up a perimeter in the area until a K-9 could arrive. A Posey County Sheriff's Office K-9 arrived shortly after and was able to track and apprehend Caines in a wooded area. A search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of marijuana. Caines was arrested and transported to the hospital for medical clearance for the accident as well as a dog bite. Caines was then transported to the Posey County Jail. The juvenile was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and was then released to a parent.
