We are already through 4 weeks of the high school football regular season, and it’s been a nice start to the year for both Posey County teams. The North Posey Vikings improved to 4-0 last Friday, thanks to a 34-14 win at Tell City. It was the first loss of the year for the Marksmen. The Vikings will have a big showdown this Friday night at home against the Heritage Hills Patriots who are 3-1.
The Mt. Vernon Wildcats earned their 3rd-straight win on Friday as they defeated Washington at home, 28-17. It was the Hatchets’ first loss of the season, and the Wildcats improved to 3-1. Mt. Vernon will be on the road this Friday evening at Forest Park.
Coming up tonight from 5:30 PM until 6:00 PM here on Posey County Radio, we will have both Mt. Vernon and North Posey Football Coaches Shows. The Mt. Vernon Show will be broadcast live from United Fidelity Bank in Mt. Vernon on 106.7 FM WMVI and online at poseycountyradio.com. Allen Buck will catch up with Wildcats Head Coach Justin Fischer.
The North Posey Show can be found on 98.9 FM WPIW and online at poseycountyradio.com. Typically, the show is live from Straws Scoops in Poseyville, but tonight’s show has been recorded and will be aired at 5:30 PM. Jordan Fisher is joined by Vikings Head Coach Waylon Schenk.
Posey County Community Corrections Director Justin Rutledge accepted a new position as Chief of Police for the Mt. Vernon Police Department after the departure of previous chief Andy Rush. Andy took a position in Madisonville, KY as student resource officer for Madisonville North Hopkins High School which moved him back to his home state. Justin has served as a member of the Posey County Sheriff's Department, as well as a former member of the Henderson Kentucky Police Department from 2011 to 2014. As Justin Rutledge steps away from the position of corrections director, the position has already been filled. On September 11th, Brittney Deig Butler was appointed to fill the vacancy. Brittney was hired by the Community Corrections office as a case manager in March of 2021. Brittney has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is excited to begin her role as the new director.
The Mt. Vernon Fire Department says that on Thursday, September 26th at 5:30 PM they will be dedicating their new fire truck at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station. Their new engine is a new Ford F550 with a custom utility bed that was bult by Gerry’s Automotive here in Posey County. The new truck will be replacing a 1989 American LaFrance engine. The new engine will be dedicated to former Fire Chief, Bill Booth.

Coming up tonight in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon JV Football plays at Washington at 6:00 PM…Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer travels to Princeton at 5:30 PM…Wildcats Girls Soccer is home against Gibson Southern at 6:00 PM…and Mt. Vernon Girls Golf welcomes North Posey at 4:15 PM.
North Posey JV Football plays host to Tell City at 6:00 PM…and Vikings Volleyball plays at home against Pike Central. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:00 PM.
Week 2 action from the NFL on Sunday saw the Indianapolis Colts fall to 0-2 on the young season as they lost at the Green Bay Packers, 16-10. Colts Running Back Jonathan Taylor carried the ball 12 times for 103 yards and Quarterback Anthony Richardson was 17-for-34 for 204 yards. Richardson did throw a touchdown pass, but also threw 3 interceptions. Green Bay Running Back Josh Jacobs had 32 carries for 151 yards. The Packers improve to 1-1. Next week the Colts are home against the Bears and the Packers play at the Titans.
On Sunday Night Football last night, the Chicago Bears fell in Houston to the Texans, 19-13. Chicago Quarterback Caleb Williams finished the night 23-for-37 passing for 174 yards and had 2 interceptions. The Bears now sit at 1-1 and will be in Indy next week to play the Colts.
The Tennessee Titans are off to an 0-2 start as they got beat at home by the New York Jets, 24-17. Titans Quarterback Will Levis finished the day 19-for-28 for 192 yards, 1 touchdown pass, and 1 interception. The Titans are home next week against the Packers.
The Cincinnati Bengals lost a heartbreaker, 26-25 at the Kansas City Chiefs. Harrison Butker kicked a 51-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow was 23-for-36 passing for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns in the loss. Cincy is 0-2 and Kansas City improves to 2-0. The Bengals will be home for Week 3 on Monday Night Football and will square off with the Washington Commanders. The Chiefs travel to Atlanta next to face the Falcons on Sunday Night Football.
The St. Louis Cardinals got swept in Toronto by the Blue Jays, 3-2 on Sunday. It’s now 3-straight losses for the Redbirds who drop to 74-75. The Cardinals are back home tonight to begin a 4-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at 6:45 PM.
The Chicago Cubs were able to avoid a 3-game sweep in Colorado yesterday as they beat the Rockies, 6-2. The Cubs improve to 76-73. They return home this evening to start a 3-game set against the Oakland Athletics at 6:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds failed to finish off a 3-game sweep in Minnesota against the Twins on Sunday as the Reds lost, 9-2. Cincinnati sits at 73-78 and will enjoy tonight off before hosting the Atlanta Braves for 3-games starting Tuesday night.
