Rising grocery prices are putting added strain on households across the region, with seniors on fixed incomes feeling the most impact. The Tri-State Food Bank is now working to expand its reach, calling for more local sites to help distribute monthly food packages to older adults throughout the Tri-State area. The effort is part of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, a federally funded USDA initiative that provides eligible seniors with monthly boxes of nutritious food. Those packages, assembled by volunteers, typically include fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and dairy products. Food bank officials say higher food prices, combined with cuts to SNAP benefits, are making it increasingly difficult for many families to afford groceries. Seniors, in particular, face added challenges, as their fixed incomes leave little room to adjust to rising costs. Transportation is another barrier, especially for seniors living in rural communities, where access to food and essential services can be limited. To meet the growing need, the food bank is seeking public, private, nonprofit, or government locations that can host monthly distributions. Interested sites must have secure storage space and access to refrigeration to safely hold perishable items. Right now, distribution locations are limited, but the organization hopes to grow its network in the coming months. Organizations interested in becoming a distribution site are encouraged to contact the Tri-State Food Bank for more information.
