Mount Vernon Police Department officials say an Illinois woman was arrested on drug charges Wednesday, making it the second time in three weeks that she’s been arrested on drug charges. According to a press release, officers saw a vehicle that didn’t have proper lighting on the back and made a traffic stop. Police say when they made contact with the driver, later identified as Sarah Smith of Norris City, they could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Smith admitted marijuana had been smoked in the vehicle in the past. While searching the vehicle, officers found a marijuana smoking pipe, marijuana wax, a marijuana roach, drug paraphernalia and digital scales with meth on it. Officials say Smith was arrested and taken to the Posey County Jail. Smith is being charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Paraphernalia.

 

Posey County 911 Dispatch posted on Facebook that today Sabic will continue to conduct test burns. If you see a large amount of smoke coming from that area of town, don’t be alarmed. Sabic will be letting dispatch know when they start and complete each burn today. They will also be conducting a full week of fire training the week of February 12th through February 16th.

 

Posey County officials say a Kentucky man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing the death of another person in a fatal crash that happened in July of 2023. According to a press release, 36-year-old Dustin Broad appeared in the Posey County Circuit Court on Wednesday where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Broad plead guilty to Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle with a Controlled Substance in the Blood, a Level 4 Felony and Driving While Suspended. Officials say, as part of Broad’s guilty plea, he admitted to causing the death of Jodi B. Wheeler while driving a vehicle with meth and THC in his bloodstream. Police records show that Posey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the area of State Road 66 and Bluegrass Road in reference to a vehicle crash with injuries back in July of 2023. Officials say Broad told law enforcement that he was driving the vehicle when lightning struck, causing him to go off the roadway and into a ditch. The press release states that a female passenger in Broad’s vehicle, later identified as 38-year-old Jodi B. Wheeler, was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to the Posey County Prosecutor’s Office, Broad suffered no serious injuries during the crash. Broad will be transported to the Indiana Department of Correction to serve his sentence.

 

The North Posey Business Professionals of America posted on Facebook that they are having a Hacienda Give Back night this evening. Proceeds will go to help members pay for their state convention. The North Posey Business Professionals of America have posted a picture on their Facebook Page that you are supposed to share when you eat at Hacienda tonight. The town of Cynthiana is in need of a part-time Town Marshall. Prior law enforcement experience is required. Interested applicants may apply in person at the Cynthiana Town Hall, or resumes may be mailed to PO Box 95, Cynthiana, IN 47612. All applications/resumes must be received no later than noon on March 5th, 2024.

 

The Evansville Purple Aces Men’s Basketball team picked a big upset victory last night at home over Bradley, 73-70. The Braves came in winners of 11-of-12 and were tied for 2nd in the Missouri Valley Conference. UE has now won 4-straight games to improve to 15-9 overall and 6-7 in the MVC. Ben Humrichous paced the Aces with 14 points. Evansville travels to Murray State on Saturday.

 

Coming up this evening in local college basketball action, both the USI Women’s and Men’s team is home taking on Eastern Illinois. The Women’s game tips off at 5:00 PM and the Men’s game will follow at 7:30 PM. USI Women’s Basketball is 14-6 on the season and 9-1 in the OVC. The Screaming Eagles Men’s Basketball team sits at 6-17 on the year and 3-7 in the conference.

 

From the NBA tonight, the Indiana Pacers play host to the Golden State Warriors at 6:00 PM. The Pacers are looking for back-to-back wins as they are 29-23 on the season.
