A trial date has now been pushed back for a seventh time in a 2021 double murder case. Officials say the jury trial for Austin Kusturin is now set to start May 28th. It was most recently supposed to start next Monday. Kusturin was arrested after John and Elizabeth Hall were found dead in their home on Mulberry Street in Mount Vernon back in November 2021. Records show the defense counsel requested the continuance due to an ongoing medical issue. Prosecutor Clowers says he objected the delay.

 

Officials in Posey County are hoping to get some feedback from consultants on a housing study. The Board of Commissioners of Posey County announced a request for proposals for professional consulting services for a comprehensive housing study. Officials say the study will evaluate the current housing landscape, analyze market trends and engage stakeholders to provide valuable insights for strategic housing development. The study area will cover unincorporated Posey County, as well as Mount Vernon, Poseyville, New Harmony, Cynthiana and Griffin. Proposals must be mailed or delivered to the Posey County Auditor’s Office in Mount Vernon before 8:30 AM on May 8th. Proposals may also be submitted to the Commissioners at the Hovey House Meeting Room in Mount Vernon before 9:00 AM on May 8th.

 

Three people are facing felony drug charges in Posey County after getting pulled over Tuesday. Officers with the Mt. Vernon Police Department say they saw a car with expired registration run a stop sign, leading to a traffic stop around 3:30 AM. Police say Derek Flahardy, Ashley Sandefur, and Jacob Nebelski were in the car. When officers had all three step out of the vehicle, they say a bag of pills was seen on the floorboard. During a search of the vehicle, officers say they found meth, needles, fake money, a digital scale, and more pills. They say they discovered Nebelski also had warrants out of Vanderburgh County. All three were arrested and booked into the Posey County Jail.

 

Authorities have released the identity of a driver who passed away after crashing into a lake on the east side of Evansville on Tuesday evening. Emergency crews were called to Eagle Crossing Lake off of Eagle Lake Drive around 6:30 PM Tuesday after a driver went into the water. Authorities said the driver was taken to the hospital, but that they passed away. The coroner's office identified the man who passed away as 64-year-old David Wayne Parrott of Evansville. The report from the coroner's office says that Parrott's cause and manner of death are pending toxicology and the final autopsy report. The crash remains under investigation.

 

The OVC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournament tipped off yesterday in downtown Evansville at Ford Center. USI Women’s Basketball, who is the #1 seed, will play tomorrow at 1:00 PM. They earned a double bye and only have to win two games to win the tournament.

USI Men’s Basketball was the #8 seed and played last night. The Screaming Eagles fell to #5 seed Tennessee State, 78-64. USI ends the year on a 4-game losing streak and with a record of 8-24.

Evansville Men’s Basketball plays their first round MVC Tournament game this evening at 6:00 PM at Enterprise Center in downtown St. Louis. The Purple Aces are the #10 seed and will be taking on #7 seed Illinois State. During the regular season, they split the two games played. Both teams won on their own home floors.

Evansville had several players receive recognition from the conference office this week. Ben Humrichous was named the 2024 MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to the MVC All-Newcomer Team. Chuck Bailey was placed on the All-Freshman Team and All-Bench Team. Tanner Cuff also earned a spot on the MVC All-Bench Team.

 

From Men’s College Basketball last night…Indiana beat Minnesota on the road, 70-58. The Hoosiers have now won 3-straight games to improve to 17-13 and 9-10 in the Big 10. #15 Kentucky took care of Vanderbilt at home, 93-77. The Cats are now 22-8 and 12-5 in the SEC.

 

Coming up this evening in the NBA…the Indiana Pacers return home to square off against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 6:00 PM. The Pacers are hoping for back-to-back wins as they sit at 35-28 on the year.
