One person was injured as a result of a gas line rupture on Tile Factory Road near Mt. Vernon Junior and Senior High School yesterday. Officials say a worker contracted with CenterPoint was working at the scene and hit an 8 inch pipeline at approximately 12:57 PM on Wednesday. One person was transported to a hospital with a minor injury. Officials with CenterPoint Energy say this incident resulted in temporary electricity loss for approximately 1,250 customers, which have since been restored. Neighboring businesses were impacted after officials shut down the gas line following the rupture. One house was also reportedly evacuated. School officials dismissed students as soon as possible, all after school practices were relocated, and all events on campus were canceled.
Week 6 of the High School Football regular season is tomorrow night, and the Mt. Vernon Wildcats will be at home to take on the Boonville Pioneers at 7:00 PM. The Wildcats have a record of 3-2 and will be trying to get back on track after losing at Forest Park last week. Boonville sits at 2-3 on the season. The North Posey Vikings welcome the Tecumseh Braves tomorrow at 7:00 PM. The Vikings are now 4-1 on the year after they suffered their first loss last week at home against Heritage Hills. This past Tuesday, the updated Indiana Football Coaches Association polls were released. The North Posey Vikings are ranked 6th in Class 2A. In Class 5A, Castle is ranked 10th. In Class 4A, Reitz is 2nd. Several tri-state teams are ranked in Class 3A with Memorial 1st, Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern tied for 2nd, Mater Dei is 6th, and Southridge is 14th. In Class 1A, Forest Park is 13th.
The Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department posted on Facebook that Youth Basketball registration has started. The deadline is October 18th, and games will start on November 9th. Last night in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball lost in straight sets at Memorial. The Wildcats drop to 4-12 overall. Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis picked up a 3-2 win at Harrison. North Posey Boys Tennis beat Reitz at home 5-0 to improve to 11-6 on the year.
Coming up this evening in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball heads to Tecumseh. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow at 7:00 PM. North Posey Girls Soccer is home taking on Heritage Hills at 5:30 PM and Vikings Boys Soccer also welcomes Heritage Hills at 7:00 PM.
Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer plays host to Boonville at 5:30 PM and Wildcats Boys Tennis is home tonight taking on Tecumseh at 5:00 PM.
The St. Louis Cardinals won their 4th-straight game last night as they took care of the Rockies in Colorado, 5-2. The Cardinals improve to 81-77 on the year and go for the 3-game sweep of the Rockies on the road today at 2:10 PM.
The Chicago Cubs lost the finale of a 3-game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies, 9-6. The Cubs lost 2-of-3 in the series and now sit at 81-78 overall. The Cubs are off today and will finish up the regular season this weekend with 3 games against the Reds in Chicago. That series starts tomorrow afternoon.
The Cincinnati Reds got beat in Cleveland by the Guardians, 5-2. The Reds dropped both games of their brief 2-game set in Cleveland and are 76-83 on the season. Cincy is off today before finishing up the year in Chicago this weekend against the Cubs.
