People in the Evansville area will have a chance this weekend to safely get rid of unwanted prescription medications. The Indiana State Police is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Administration for the nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative on Saturday, April 25th. The program aims to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft by providing a safe, proper way to dispose of unused or expired medications. Collection sites will be set up across the country, allowing people to drop off pills and liquid medications for environmentally safe disposal. Officials stress that needles or sharps will not be accepted. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Authorities say the effort addresses a serious public health and safety concern. Studies show many prescription drugs that are abused are obtained from family or friends, often from the home. Officials also warn that common disposal methods—like flushing medications or throwing them in the trash—can pose environmental and safety risks. Locally, the Indiana State Police Evansville Post will host a collection site from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. The post is located at 19411 U.S. 41, where participants are asked to bring items to the front doors of the new two-story building and place them in designated drop boxes. Again, no needles or sharps will be accepted. For residents looking to clean out their medicine cabinets safely, Saturday offers a simple and secure option.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is marking National Work Zone Awareness Week with a reminder for drivers to slow down and stay alert. State transportation officials say construction season is ramping up, with more than 1,000 projects planned across Indiana this year. Of those, about 130 are focused on improving traffic flow and safety, and more than 6,200 miles of pavement will be resurfaced or replaced. INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist says it’s critical for drivers to keep safety top of mind when traveling through work zones, to protect themselves, their passengers, other motorists, and road crews. Indiana Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure Matt Ubelhor says 16 people were killed and 1,500 injured in work zones across the state last year. Officials say slowing down, avoiding distractions, and following posted signs can help prevent crashes and save lives.

A theft case involving a former Evansville Fire Department chief has been resolved, nearly two years after his arrest. Court records show former Fire Chief Paul Anslinger pleaded guilty Monday during a change of plea hearing. As part of a plea agreement, two theft charges and an official misconduct charge were dismissed. Anslinger pleaded guilty to one count of theft. He was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to repay 6,000 dollars to the Evansville Fire Department. The case now brings a close to the investigation that began following his arrest nearly two years ago.
