The CK Newsome Center is no longer an option for those looking to get out of the heat in Evansville. The facility was open as a cooling shelter for anyone looking to get out of the hot weather, but officials say it will no longer be an option until further notice. Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer says that the building's HVAC system shut down overnight and is now awaiting major repairs. As of Tuesday morning, he said the temperature inside the building was around 82 degrees. While the building does remain open, all Parks Department programming there has also been cancelled for the day. Officials say that if you need a place to cool off, you can always go to one of the city's public library locations.

 

EVSC Athletics officials say all SIAC football games have been pushed back Friday because to the extreme heat. Both the Jasper at Harrison game and the Vincennes Lincoln at Reitz game are now at 7:30 p.m. CST. Bosse at Central and North at Memorial are at 8 p.m. CST. There are other area corporations that have announced game time changes. There have been no changes announced for either the Mt. Vernon at South Spencer game on Friday or the North Posey at Princeton contest.

 

The first AP High School Football rankings have been released after the first week of the season. In Class 4A, Reitz is 3rd and Memorial is 7th. Class 3A has Heritage Hills 8th and Gibson Southern 9th. In Class 2A, Mater Dei is ranked 1st. Teams that are receiving votes in their respective class, includes North Posey, Southridge, Castle, and North.

 

Officials from Ellis Park Racing and Gaming announced Friday’s nine-race card has been postponed to Monday. They say that’s due to an excessive heat warning. Ellis Park officials say the entirety of Friday’s card will shift to Monday and will not be re-drawn. First post will be 11:45 a.m. A release shows the final three days of the Ellis Park meet will be Saturday-Monday. At this time there are no changes to Saturday-Sunday’s cards and first posts are scheduled at 11:45 a.m.

 

In western Vanderburgh County, Burdette Park will soon be home to new pickle ball courts. County leaders’ broke ground on the courts Monday morning. This new addition is part of a $472,470 project to build six pickle ball courts and upgrade the current tennis courts. The project has been 10 months in the making. City officials say the new courts should be completed by November 14th of this year, depending on the weather.

 

An Evansville nonprofit organization received a generous grant Monday. Yesterday, Wesselman Nature Society received a $40,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation. Wesselman Nature Society, which operates and manages Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve and Howell Wetlands in Evansville, will use the funds to continue installing American Disabilities Act-compliant elevated boardwalks within the nature preserve, which will ensure that more visitors can access the woods while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding ecosystem. The planned boardwalk expansion will connect two existing boardwalk trails in the nature preserve and add railings.

 

Sports

  • Mt. Vernon Volleyball travels to Central tonight. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:00 PM. The Wildcats lost in 4-sets last night at home against Harrison. Mt. Vernon Volleyball has a record of 1-2 on the young season.

 

  • North Posey Volleyball makes a trip to Bosse tonight. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will be around 7:00 PM.

 

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (55-71) play game 2 of their 3-game set in Pittsburgh against the Pirates at 6:05 PM. Catch the game on 106.7 FM WMVI.

 

  • The Chicago Cubs (65-59) continue their series in Detroit against the Tigers at 5:40 PM. The Cubs are going for a 4th-straight win.  

 

  • The Cincinnati Reds (64-61) get their series underway in Los Angeles against the Angels at 8:38 PM. Cincinnati is hoping to avoid a 3rd-straight loss.
