The University of Southern Indiana is launching a new program designed to strengthen the region's workforce while helping students prepare for their careers. The new Path to Professions program will connect students with employers through scholarships, paid internships and career development opportunities. University officials say the initiative creates a direct pathway from the classroom to the workplace while helping meet workforce needs across southwest Indiana. The program is getting a major boost from the Old National Bank Foundation, which has awarded the USI Foundation a $350,000 grant. The funding will provide $70,000 a year over the next five years to support the Old National Bank Path to Professions program. 15 students will receive scholarships, complete a 300-hour paid internship, and take part in leadership and career-readiness training. Over four years, each student could receive up to $22,500 in combined financial support and internship earnings. USI President Steven Bridges says the program is designed to remove financial barriers that can prevent students from taking advantage of valuable career opportunities. The first group of students has not yet been selected. University officials say there will be an application process, with financial need among the selection criteria. USI also plans to host events throughout the year to connect participating employers with students and highlight workforce development efforts.

The department partnered with Motorola Solutions on the program, which includes a drone and weatherproof docking station at the Civic Center Complex. The new fleet also features a drone designed for indoor use that can enter buildings and navigate tight spaces before officers go inside.
