The Poseyville Farmer’s Market will kick off its 2026 season today with its Opening Market Extravaganza at the Poseyville Community Center. The market will be open Tuesdays from 4 until 7 during June, July, and August at the community center located at 60 North Church Street in Poseyville. Opening day activities will include a free bounce house, free cotton candy, kids zone barrel train rides, and food from Wheel House Stromboli and Ham ‘n Cheese. Organizers say the market will feature a wide variety of in-season vegetables and fruit, baked goods, flowers, jams and jellies, local honey, crafts, soaps, candles, and other locally made products. The Mount Vernon Market Nights is also returning to the Mount Vernon Riverfront beginning next Monday, June 8. The weekly summer event will take place each Monday evening from 5 until 8 throughout June and July and will feature vendors, food trucks, and live music. Admission is free. Market Nights are scheduled for June 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, along with July 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th at the Mount Vernon Riverfront. Organizers are currently looking for vendors interested in participating in this year’s events.
Authorities in Wabash County say one person died following a grain bin incident Monday morning near Mount Carmel. According to the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to the area of Friendsville Avenue and North 1550 Boulevard after reports of three men trapped inside a grain bin. 21-year-old Steven Haase of Mount Carmel died in the incident. Two other people involved were able to get out of the bin safely and were not injured.
The Mount Vernon Conservation Club will host its annual Kids Fishing Day this Saturday, June 6th, at the club grounds located at 700 Springfield Road in Mount Vernon. The event is open to the public for children ages 16 and under. Registration begins at 8:00 Saturday morning with fishing scheduled from 9:00 until 11:00. A meal and prize giveaway will follow the fishing event. Organizers say the program has been held each year for more than 25 years. Club members help support the event through monthly contributions that fund prizes and refreshments for articipating children and their families. Event organizers also say they work each year to provide age-appropriate prizes for the kids taking part in the event.
The City of Mount Vernon has announced plans for its annual Fireworks on the Ohio celebration for the Independence Day holiday weekend. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, July 5th at the Mount Vernon riverfront. Fireworks are set to begin at 9:00 PM. Food booths will open beginning at 5:00 Sunday evening, and live entertainment will be provided by Travis Wolfe starting at 7:00. City officials are inviting the public to attend the celebration as the community marks Independence Day along with America’s 250th anniversary.
SPORTS:
The North Posey Vikings saw their baseball season come to an end last night with an 11 to 1 loss to the Mater Dei Wildcats in the IHSAA Class 2A Sectional 48 championship game in Rockport. Mater Dei improved to 26-3 on the season and advances to the regional round on Saturday. North Posey finishes the year with a 15-14 record after battling through a season that featured a young and roster following the graduation of a large senior class last year last year. The Vikings managed three hits in the contest, coming from Remy Johnson, Brennan Reich, and Grant Cullman but struggled to keep pace with the Wildcats’ offense. Mater Dei collected 10 hits on the night. Despite the loss, North Posey closes the season with a winning record of 15 and 14 overall and valuable experience for the young squad.
Looking to the end of the week, the Mount Vernon and North Posey boys golf teams will begin their sectional play this Thursday at 7AM in the Mater Dei hosted Sectional 23. Schools participating include Mount Vernon, North Posey, Boonville, Castle, Bosse, Central, Evansville Christian, Reitz, Harrison, Mater Dei, North and Memorial.
And this weekend is the IHSAA Track And Field State Finals. Mount Vernon has two ladies running at the finals. They include Mount Vernon's Stella Hall. She will be running the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles. Also running is North Posey's Rowen Englebright. She will be competing in the thirty-two hundred race in Indianapolis.
