The Posey County Prosecutor Thomas Clowers is encouraging parents and guardians to take extra steps to protect children online as June marks National Internet Safety Month. Clowers says internet risks facing young people continue to grow, particularly through social media, online gaming, and messaging apps. Nationally, reports of online enticement of children increased significantly in 2025, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Online enticement involves individuals communicating with children over the internet with the intent to commit sexual offenses or abduction. The prosecutor says parents should establish clear rules for screen time and social media use, monitor online activity, use parental controls, and teach children not to share personal information or interact with strangers online. He also recommends keeping internet-connected devices in common areas of the home and regularly reviewing privacy settings and app usage. Clowers says children should be taught to immediately report any online interaction that makes them uncomfortable, especially if someone asks for photos, personal information, or money. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious online activity, cyberbullying, exploitation attempts, or impersonation to law enforcement. Additional online safety resources are available through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Mt. Vernon Athletics has announced a few coaching additions across several sports. They are welcoming back a familiar face in Coach Kaitlin Taylor, who is returning to the Wildcats’ Volleyball program as an assistant coach and the Girls Basketball program as an assistant coach. A former multi-sport standout from Carlisle County High School in Kentucky, Taylor played collegiate volleyball at Missouri Baptist University and earned numerous honors in both volleyball and basketball. Taylor says Mt. Vernon has become home thanks to the support she’s received from the school district and community.
There are also two more familiar faces returning to the Mt. Vernon Volleyball program. Recent graduates Arlissa Sharber and Hannah Seifert are returning as coaches. Sharber will serve as an assistant coach at the high school level, while Seifert takes over as the new junior high volleyball coach. Sharber, a 2024 graduate, was a two-year varsity starter, earned Second Team All-PAC honors, and finished her career among Mt. Vernon’s all-time leaders in digs, kills, and assists. She is currently continuing her volleyball career at Frontier College. Seifert, also a 2024 graduate and Second Team All-PAC selection, recorded 341 kills, 67 blocks, and 40 aces during her high school career. She now brings her leadership and passion for the game to the junior high program. Athletic Director Leigh Ann Latshaw says both former Wildcats represented the program with pride as student-athletes and will have a positive impact on the next generation of players.
Finally, the Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer program welcomes back Natasha Schmitzer as an Assistant Varsity Coach. A Mt. Vernon graduate and former standout player, Schmitzer will work alongside Head Coach Amy Weber as she returns to the program where she earned numerous honors, including team MVP, Offensive MVP, All-Conference recognition, and three years as team captain. She later continued her soccer career at Oakland City University. Schmitzer says coaching is an opportunity to give back to the school and community that played a major role in her life. Athletic Director Leigh Ann Latshaw says Schmitzer’s passion for soccer, commitment to Mt. Vernon, and desire to invest in young people makes her a valuable addition to the coaching staff.
