The EVSC is preparing for a major change to student phone use in schools. During Monday night’s school board meeting, parents received information about a new district policy on personal electronic devices in the classroom. The change comes as a new Indiana law takes effect July 1st, requiring all school districts to adopt policies banning the use of personal electronic devices during the instructional school day. Under the new EVSC policy, beginning with the upcoming school year in August, students will be required to keep devices powered off, stored away, and inaccessible throughout the school day. The policy applies to cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, and any other device capable of connecting to the internet or sending messages. District leaders say the biggest change from the current policy is that students will no longer be allowed to use personal devices during lunch or passing periods. The restriction does not apply to school-issued devices used for classroom instruction. EVSC officials say they are working closely with school administrators to ensure the policy is enforced consistently across all district schools.

The University of Southern Indiana is honoring a longtime nursing leader with a major gift benefiting future students. The family of Dr. Nadine Coudret, the first dean of USI’s Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions, has donated one million dollars to the university. The endowed gift will provide ongoing support for the school’s nursing program and create a new annual scholarship for nursing students. In recognition of the donation, the university announced the nursing program will now be known as the Coudret Nursing Program. Dr. Coudret served as dean of the college for 24 years, from 1988 through 2012. During that time, she helped establish bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral nursing degree programs and played a key role in expanding USI’s health professions offerings. Most of the donation will provide unrestricted funding to help meet the nursing program’s greatest needs each year. Part of the endowment will also establish the Christine Elliott Scholarship, named in memory of Dr. Coudret’s mother. The scholarship will provide half-tuition assistance to adult learners enrolled in USI nursing degree programs. Coudret’s family surprised her with the announcement during a reception at the Health Professions Center earlier this month. USI currently offers several nursing pathways, including a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, a fully online RN-to-BSN program, and graduate-level nursing programs focused on advanced practice, leadership and education.

The University of Evansville has approved a new name for its former Center for the Advancement of Learning. University trustees announced the center will now be known as the Center for Professional and Continuing Education. UE officials say the change better reflects the center’s focus on serving adult learners, working professionals, employers and community partners. They say the updated name will also provide greater clarity for prospective students and improve visibility for continuing education and workforce training programs. University leaders say all current programs and services will remain unchanged under the new name, including adult degree completion programs, certificate offerings, dual credit initiatives and industry partnerships.
