The Posey County Solid Waste office says they are closed today for Election Day. The Mt. Vernon Recycle Center will still be open from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and the Poseyville Recycle Center will be open from 12:00 PM until 6:00 PM.

Indiana residents planning to vote in the primary election have a little extra time to get the identification they need today. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is extending hours at all branches today as they will be open from 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM. During these extended hours, branches will focus on issuing and updating identification. That includes new, renewed, amended, or replacement ID cards, as well as learner permits, driver’s licenses, and commercial driver’s licenses. Customers should be sure to bring all required documents to complete their transactions. State officials also remind voters that free state-issued ID cards are available for voting purposes. Any eligible Indiana resident who is a U.S. citizen, can provide proper documentation, and will be at least 18 years old by the next general or municipal election can receive one. For more information on branch locations and required documents, visit the Indiana BMV website. All branches will return to regular business hours tomorrow.

Drivers in Mount Vernon should prepare for a road closure beginning later this week. City officials have announced that the west end of Water Street, starting at Parke Street, will be closed beginning this Friday. The closure is needed so crews can safely carry out a sewer repair project in the area. During the construction period, traffic will be restricted and detours will be clearly marked. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and use alternate routes whenever possible. For more information or to ask questions, you can contact the city office at 812-838-3396.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association board of directors has voted down a proposal to add a shot clock to high school basketball. During its annual meeting yesterday, the board rejected a measure that would have introduced a 35-second shot clock beginning in the 2028–29 season. The proposal, submitted on behalf of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, received just one vote in favor, with 17 opposed. Despite growing support among coaches, the measure failed to gain traction with school administrators. A recent survey by the coach’s association found that 68 percent of boys and girls basketball coaches support adding a shot clock. However, according to IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig, feedback from principals and athletic directors told a different story. Straw polls conducted statewide showed only about 24 percent of administrators favored the change. The issue has gained more attention in recent years, but for now, Indiana high school basketball will continue without a shot clock.
