We are through four weeks of the High School Football season and on Monday the updated Indiana Football Coaches Association Rankings were released. The North Posey Vikings are ranked 8th in Class 2A as they are off to a 4-0 start. Other teams ranked include Castle as they are 9th in Class 5A. In Class 4A, Reitz is 8th and Heritage Hill is 15th. Class 3A features Memorial ranked 1st, Gibson Southern 4th, and Mater Dei 5th. In Class 1A, North Daviess is 5th and Springs Valley is 10th.
The University of Southern Indiana will celebrate the opening of a new outdoor learning pavilion later this month. USI will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free community open house on Saturday, September 26th, coinciding with National Public Lands Day. The pavilion is the centerpiece of a three-year, $150,000 project called Nature’s Classroom: Bridging Education and Recreation at the University of Southern Indiana. The project is funded through a Community Impact Project grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation, with additional support from Toyota Motor North America. After the ribbon-cutting, visitors can take part in hands-on activities focused on pollinators, native plants, local wildlife and environmental stewardship. An expert-led walk along the USI-Burdette Trail also will be offered. USI faculty, staff and community partners will lead the activities, designed to teach visitors about the ecosystems of Southern Indiana. The new pavilion and interpretive signs are intended to expand outdoor education and recreation opportunities for USI students, K-through-12 students and community trail users. The pavilion is located east of Liberty Arena and the tennis courts and can be accessed from Lot L on Bluff Lane. The September 26th event is free and open to the public.
The West Side Nut Club has unveiled its Munchie Map for this year’s Fall Festival. The map is designed to help festivalgoers find their way around and, of course, find something to eat. Organizers say there will be 137 food booths serving everything from Fall Festival favorites to unique creations. This year, the Munchie Map is available through the official West Side Nut Club Fall Festival app. Each food booth and its complete menu are included, making it easier for visitors to find exactly what they’re craving. Officials do caution that the map may not be 100 percent accurate because of the ever-changing nature of the festival. The West Side Nut Club Streets Committee is working to keep the information as current and useful as possible. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival runs October 5th-10th.
Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari are celebrating several big wins at the 2026 Golden Ticket Awards in Austin, Texas. Splashin’ Safari took home its first-ever award for Best Water Park in the World. The park’s three water coasters also made history, sweeping the top three spots for Best Water Park Ride. Mammoth took the #1 spot, followed by Wildebeest and Cheetah Chase. Holiday World’s The Voyage is also back on top. The wooden roller coaster was named the #1 wooden roller coaster in the world. It’s the first time The Voyage has won the title in 15 years.
Ford is recalling more than 223,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of a problem with fuel tank straps. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the straps may have been improperly assembled, allowing the fuel tank to leak or potentially detach while the vehicle is being driven. A detached fuel tank could create a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash. A fuel leak could also cause the engine to stall or increase the risk of a fire. The recall affects certain 2023 through 2027 Ford F-150 pickup trucks. Ford says the affected fuel tank straps may have been assembled improperly between January 2023 and August 2026. Dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and replace them if necessary. The repairs will be completed free of charge.
Last night in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball won at home in straight sets vs Pike Central to move to 9-4 on the season. The Vikings have won eight of their last nine matches.
Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer got shutout at Princeton, 3-0. Wildcats Boys Soccer is 1-6.
Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer lost at home against Gibson Southern, 6-1. Wildcats Girls Soccer is 3-8 overall.
Tonight, in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball travels to Reitz for a 5:30 PM JV Match and a 7:00 PM Varsity match.
North Posey Boys Soccer is at Mt. Carmel at 6:00 PM.
North Posey Boys Tennis has a home match vs Mt. Vernon at 4:30 PM.
Mt. Vernon Volleyball is at home vs Carmi. The JV match starts at 6:00 PM and the Varsity match is at 7:30 PM.
Mt. Vernon Girls Golf hosts Mater Dei and Reitz at 4:00 PM.
Local College sports this evening sees USI and Evansville Men’s Soccer battle at the University of Evansville at 7:00 PM.
Evansville Volleyball is on the road at UT Martin at 6:00 PM.
From Major League Baseball on Monday night, the St. Louis Cardinals started their three-game series at home vs the San Francisco Giants with a 2-1 victory. St. Louis scored both runs in the 5th inning. Leo Bernal went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Alec Burleson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Cardinals are 75-76. Game two is this evening at 6:45 PM.
The Chicago Cubs took care of the Atlanta Braves to begin their three-game set at home, 7-3. Pete Crow-Armstrong went 4-for-5 with four RBI’s, including hitting his 42nd home run. The Cubs improve to 84-67. Tonight, the series continues at 6:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds lost the first game of a four-game series at home vs the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1. Cincinnati’s lone run came on Elly De La Cruz’s 27th home run. The Reds are 70-80 on the year. Game two of the series is tonight at 5:40 PM.
The Chicago White Sox took the opening game of an important three-game series at the Cleveland Guardians, 7-3. Chicago scored six runs in the 6th inning to break the game open. Miguel Vargas blasted his 31st home run. The White Sox are 77-73 and now 1.5 games in front of the Guardians for first place in the American League Central Division. The series continues this evening at 5:40 PM.
