Authorities have identified the Mount Vernon man who remains missing after a boat capsized on the Ohio River Saturday morning. Black Township Fire and Rescue says 44-year-old Richard Leinenweaver of Mount Vernon was last seen in the water after the vessel overturned. Leinenweaver is described as a white male, about six feet tall and weighing 192 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and gray shorts. Three people were aboard the boat when it capsized. Two people were rescued after being swept downstream while clinging to logs. They later told first responders that Leinenweaver was still in the water. Crews were called to the river shortly after 9:00 AM on Saturday following reports of two people being swept downstream. Search crews have been working around the clock since then. Black Township Fire officials say the search was suspended Tuesday night for the fourth day, but crews resumed the search this morning. Officials are asking the public to stay off the water and avoid the boat ramp area at Canal and Water streets to keep the area clear for first responders.
The Mt. Vernon and Evansville Police Department are increasing enforcement efforts aimed at impaired drivers ahead of the Labor Day holiday. Officials say officers are partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute as part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Starting today and continuing through September 7th, officers statewide will work overtime, conduct sobriety checkpoints and increase patrols to identify drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police say preliminary 2025 data shows nearly 23 percent of Indiana traffic fatalities involved alcohol, while more than 41 percent involved drug impairment. Officers are reminding drivers to plan a safe, sober ride home before drinking and to never let someone who has been drinking get behind the wheel. Those hosting gatherings are also encouraged to make sure guests have a sober ride home. Police say anyone who sees an impaired driver should call 911. Officers also remind everyone to wear a seat belt, calling it the best defense against an impaired driver.

The University of Evansville is expanding its partnerships with area high schools, giving more students the opportunity to earn college credit before they graduate. UE has signed nine dual-credit agreements this week with schools across the region. The agreements include Central, Mater Dei, Memorial, Evansville Christian, Castle, Warrick Pathways, Indiana Digital Learning School, Northeast Dubois and Southridge High Schools. University officials say some of the partnerships build on relationships that have been in place for years, while others represent new opportunities to connect with local schools. The agreements vary by school. Some offer a single course, while others provide access to as many as 22 courses. Depending on the partnership, students may be able to earn UE credit for qualifying courses taught at their high school, enroll directly in University of Evansville courses, or take advantage of both options. University officials say the goal is to provide more pathways for students to begin earning college credit before they graduate from high school.
