Last night in local high school boys’ basketball, the Mt. Vernon Wildcats went on the road to Tecumseh and defeated the Braves, 79-53. Mt. Vernon improves to 12-11 on the year. They will finish up regular season play on Thursday at home against South Spencer at 7:30 PM.  

 

The North Posey Vikings got tripped up at Loogootee last night, 51-41. North Posey drops to 16-5 on the season. The Vikings welcome Gibson Southern on Thursday to close out the regular season at 7:00 PM.

 

From college sports last night, both the USI Women’s and Men’s Basketball team went on the road to Morehead State and earned a win. The Women’s team defeated Morehead State, 72-64. Madi Webb and Chloe Gannon each had 14 points to pace USI. With the victory, they clinched the OVC Regular Season Title outright and will be the number one seed in the OVC Tournament. The Screaming Eagles are 19-6 and 14-1 in the conference. It also means that USI Women’s Basketball will compete in the WNIT.

 

USI Men’s Basketball upset Morehead State, 80-73. Jeremiah Hernandez scored a game-high 28 points for the Screaming Eagles. They improve to 8-20 overall and 5-10 in the OVC. With three games left in the regular season, USI Men’s Basketball moves into sole possession of 8th place in the conference. The top 8 teams make the OVC Tournament.

 

Evansville Baseball won their 3rd-straight game as they beat Bellarmine in their home opener yesterday, 16-6. The Purple Aces improve to 3-1 on the young season and will play a three-game series at New Orleans this coming weekend.

 

Coming up tonight in local college sports…Evansville Men’s Basketball is on the road in Chicago to battle the Flames of Illinois-Chicago at 7:00 PM. The Purple Aces have just four games left in the regular season as they are trying to end a three-game losing streak. UE is 15-12 overall and 6-10 in the MVC.

 

Also tonight in Men’s College Basketball…IU is home against Nebraska at 7:30 PM…#12 Illinois is at Penn State at 5:30 PM…Louisville plays host to Notre Dame at 6:00 PM…and #17 UK heads to LSU at 8:00 PM.

 

The German Township Fire Department is mourning after one of their dedicated lifetime members passed away. Stan Eickhoff died Sunday at the age of 69. Officials say he joined the department in the early 1980s and held various roles including firefighter, captain, Company 9 Representative and Vice President of the Board of Directors. Eickhoff will be laid to rest this upcoming Friday. 

 

The Mt. Vernon Lions Club has announced they have disassembled. Officials say they have a lack of help and can no longer stay open. They say they’ve had a great time serving the community, and they are sad to see it end. The officials say this would mean no fireworks for Independence Day, but city officials say the show will go on. City officials say to expect more details later.

 

The Posey County Auditor is now accepting applications for a property deputy within the Auditor's office. This is a full-time position with daytime working hours Monday through Friday. The preferred applicant will have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with the public when necessary. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel is necessary, along with the ability to learn essential software programs for the duties of this position. The University of Southern Indiana is offering a boost to those looking to begin a career as an educator. The school will be hosting their second annual 'Be A Teacher Day' next week on Wednesday, February 28th. The event highlights the importance of teachers, allowing students to meet with current educators and ask questions. Last year's event drew in over 350 high school students from across the region. USI's teacher education department offers Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degrees through several majors.
