A new federal law could help make housing more affordable in Evansville. The bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law Saturday after President Trump neither signed nor vetoed the measure within the required timeframe. The legislation is designed to reduce costs for homebuyers and renters by making it easier and more affordable to build new homes. It also gives communities new tools to increase housing supply, cut red tape for developers, and encourage new residential construction. Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry says the law comes at an important time as the city works toward its goal of starting construction on 2,000 new homes and apartments by the end of next year. She says Evansville has already reached about 61 percent of that goal and has invested more than $10 million in housing incentives. More than 1,226 housing units are currently under development or in the pipeline. Mayor Terry says the new law will provide additional funding and resources to help communities build more affordable housing. She says it will also help homeowners access assistance to repair and maintain older homes, preserving existing housing throughout the city. The median home price in Evansville is about $200,000. A recent housing study found the city will need between 4,000 and 5,000 additional housing units to keep pace with future growth.
