News:

Officials with the Firefly Festival in New Harmony have announced that all festival activities scheduled for this Friday have been canceled due to predicted severe weather. Organizers say they are disappointed to make the decision, but the safety of visitors, volunteers, and the community remains their top priority. The good news is that festival activities will continue as planned on Saturday. As the sun sets, New Harmony will once again come alive with thousands of twinkling fireflies lighting up trails and the riverfront in a summer tradition enjoyed by families from across the region. This year’s festival celebrates Indiana’s state insect, Say’s Firefly, which was first described in New Harmony by naturalist Thomas Say in 1826. Saturday’s schedule includes firefly tours, live music, glow dance parties, food vendors, historic performances, a 5K Run/Walk, children’s activities, crafts, and much more. Festival organizers say the event offers the perfect blend of nature, history, and family fun in one of Indiana’s most historic communities. For a complete list of Saturday’s activities, visit the Posey County Radio Facebook page, where a schedule has been shared from Visit New Harmony.

Several organizations across the Tri-State are receiving a major financial boost. The Welborn Foundation recognized this year’s grant recipients during its annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, distributing more than $3.1 million to 31 local nonprofits and schools. The funding will support programs focused on early childhood education and building healthier communities throughout the Evansville region. For many of the organizations receiving funding, the grants play a critical role in sustaining and expanding services that benefit local families and residents. The Welborn Foundation awards its early education, and healthy community grants every two years, while nonprofit excellence grants are distributed annually. Foundation leaders say the investments are designed to strengthen the long-term health and well-being of communities across the region.

Rain chances are making a return to the Tri-State beginning tonight and continuing through Saturday. Forecasters say the best chances for widespread rainfall will come on Thursday and Friday as moisture levels increase across the region, creating favorable conditions for heavier rain. By the time the system moves out Saturday night, parts of southern Illinois could see between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half inches of rainfall, with lower totals expected elsewhere across the Ohio River Valley. Once the rain clears, summer heat will come roaring back. High temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s beginning Sunday and continuing into early next week. Combined with increasing humidity, it will feel even hotter outside. Heat index values could reach between 100 and 105 degrees on Sunday and may climb as high as 105 to 110 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Those conditions could prompt Heat Advisories across the region, so residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day and keep a close eye on the forecast.
