A new program aimed at lowering energy costs is coming to southwestern Indiana. The Evansville City Council has approved a partnership with the nonprofit group Solar United Neighbors to launch the Southwest Indiana Solar Co-op. The free program allows homeowners, small businesses and nonprofits to join together to purchase solar systems at reduced group rates. The co-op is open to residents and businesses in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey, Gibson, Pike and Spencer counties. Participants can explore solar options without any obligation to buy. Lauren Lynch with the Evansville Climate Collaborative says rising utility costs make now the right time for residents to consider alternative energy options. Solar United Neighbors plans to issue a request for proposals on June 1st to determine what solar installation options are available across the region. The group will also host free informational sessions next week. The first is scheduled for Monday, May 18th at 5:30 PM at the Browning Meeting Room inside EVPL’s Central Library. Another session will be held on Wednesday, May 20th at 1:00 PM at the EVPL McCullough Branch. Mayor Stephanie Terry says the partnership supports Evansville’s goal of creating a more sustainable and resilient community.

The Mount Vernon Police Department is teaming up with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to remind drivers to buckle up during the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The enforcement effort began on Monday and continues through May 31st. Officers will conduct extra patrols focused on seatbelt use and making sure children are properly secured in car seats and booster seats. The overtime patrols are funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Indiana’s Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program. State officials say Indiana has seen a steady decline in deadly crashes involving unbelted passengers since 2021. A recent Purdue University survey found seatbelt use among Hoosiers reached more than 94 percent this year, which is above the national average. Indiana law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts. Children under eight must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat. Drivers can also face citations for passengers under 16 who are not buckled up. Police are also encouraging parents and caregivers to double-check that child safety seats are properly installed and being used correctly.
