Indiana University School of Medicine–Evansville has announced its new Psychiatry Residency program is now formally certified. In a press release, officials say the certification marks a major step forward in expanding specialized medical training and mental health services across southwest Indiana. The program is aimed at addressing the growing demand for mental health professionals, offering residents rigorous, evidence-based clinical training. Leaders say the partnership combines the academic resources of the IU School of Medicine with the clinical capabilities of Deaconess Hospital, giving residents hands-on experience in a wide range of psychiatric care settings. And while they train, those residents will also be providing care to patients every day. The program is now finalizing its curriculum and recruiting faculty, with its first class of residents expected to begin in July of 2027.
The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation is highlighting progress across the district during its annual State of the Schools address, marking a first for Superintendent Dr. Darla Hoover, who stepped into the role in May of 2025. District leaders pointed to several key accomplishments, including gains in literacy, stronger relationships with families, and rising graduation rates. Dr. Hoover says the graduation rate has climbed to 89.7%, which is an increase of more than 10% since 2021. The district is also rolling out new approaches in the classroom. Starting with the graduating class of 2029, high school students will work toward a new diploma model. Officials say it will allow schools to offer three distinct pathways, which are college, employment, or military enlistment. This gives students more flexibility and opportunities for real-world experience. Middle schools will also see changes, with a redesign focused on the unique needs of each school community. While celebrating progress, district leaders say there’s still work to do. Dr. Hoover says just over 83% of students are reading at a proficient level and improving that number remains a top priority. The event also recognized student success both in and out of the classroom, including the North High School band, which captured a state championship title in November. Today, the district will host a special signing day for students entering the armed forces, taking place at the Old National Events Plaza.
