Mt. Vernon River Day is this Friday and Saturday. Friday events begin at 11:00 AM with the opening ceremony and day one concludes with Fireworks at 9:00 PM. Day two on Saturday gets underway at 8:00 AM with the 5K Run and the day wraps up at 8:00 PM. For a full list of events, you can visit the Mt. Vernon River Days Facebook page. There is some concern about the weather this weekend. Organizers of Mt. Vernon River Days say they can’t reschedule the festival, and the show must go on. They say they are working with the Emergency Management folks that if there are severe weather conditions on the way, they will be notified. Mt. Vernon River Days will have shelter available if necessary. In the case of inclement weather and there are postponements or cancellations of any events, it will be announced over the sound system at River Days and posted on Facebook.
On Monday it was announced that Dr. Stephanie Stewart has been named the new MSD of Mt. Vernon Superintendent by unanimous vote. Stewart previously served as the Principal at Tekoppel Elementary School within the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Indiana. She began her new role with the school system yesterday morning and her term continues until June 13th, 2026. Stewart says her goal is to observe and springboard off current initiatives of teachers and staff and their visions.
A couple of Mt. Vernon athletes are in the running for the weekly courier and press awards. Mt. Vernon’s Nash Hostetter is up for the Courier and Press Football Player of the Week award after he had 10 catches for 258 yards and 4 touchdowns this past Friday in the Wildcats win over Pike Central.
Mt. Vernon’s Ella Spoon is up for the Evansville Courier and Press Fall Athlete of the Week award after she had 6 goals and 2 assists against Boonville and Tell City last week.

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball defeated Mt. Vernon at home in straight sets. The Vikings improve to 10-3 and the Wildcats fall to 2-9 on the year. North Posey Girls Soccer earned a 4-0 win at Boonville. The Lady Vikings improve to 4-3 on the season. Vikings Boys Tennis defeated South Spencer at home, 5-0. They improve to 8-3 on the year and 6-1 in the PAC.
Coming up this evening in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball plays host to North. The JV match is set for 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:00 PM. Vikings Boys Tennis heads to Tecumseh at 4:30 PM. North Posey Girls Golf is at South Spencer at 5:00 PM.
Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis is on the road to play Mater Dei at 4:30 PM and Wildcats Girls Golf battles Boonville on the road at 4:30 PM.
The St. Louis Cardinals lost the opening game of their 3-game series at home against the Cincinnati Reds last night, 3-0. The Cardinals fall to 72-72 on the year and the Reds improve to 71-75 on the season. Game 2 of the series is tonight in St. Louis at 6:45 PM.
The Chicago Cubs picked up a road win at the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3. The Cubs scored 5 runs in the 8th inning after trailing 3-1. Chicago improves to 75-70 and they go for the 3-game sweep at the Dodgers tonight at 9:10 PM.
