CenterPoint Energy says personal information belonging to some of its customers was obtained by an unauthorized third party in a recent data breach. In an SEC filing on Monday, the utility company said the information was accessed through one of its external-facing computer systems. CenterPoint says it learned about the breach after discovering an online post in September claiming to contain a dataset with customer information. The company investigated the claim and determined it was legitimate. CenterPoint says it took immediate action after learning about the breach, and the investigation remains ongoing. The company also says it has cybersecurity insurance that it expects will help offset costs related to the incident.
The Posey County Sheriff’s Office says they are now accepting applications for deputy sheriff positions. The starting salary is nearly $59,000, with medical, dental and vision insurance, as well as retirement and supplemental retirement benefits. Deputies can also take home a county vehicle if they live in Posey County, or within 15 minutes of the county. Applications are being accepted until October 2nd and are available through the Posey County Sheriff’s Office app, or at the sheriff’s office on O’Donnell Road in Mt Vernon.
MSD of Mt. Vernon says they are looking to fill a full-time financial systems analyst position. The job pays between $66,625 and $76,875, depending on experience. The position will handle duties including database management, payroll backup, grant tracking, financial analysis, tax filing and assisting the C-F-O. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or a related field, along with at least five years of experience in finance or accounting. Officials with the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership are giving the public another look at progress on the Ohio River Vision Plan. The project aims to improve riverfront areas in Evansville, Newburgh and Mt Vernon. E-REP and Sasaki Design presented the latest updates on Tuesday, including changes to the schematic design and next steps toward construction documents. Plans for the Evansville riverfront also include a new marketing campaign, a Main Street pavilion and a riverfront restaurant. And there’s excitement in all three communities about the potential impact of the riverfront improvements. Mt. Vernon Mayor Stephen Loehr says the project could help bring more people into the community and revitalize the area. Sasaki says each project has its own timeline for moving into the construction-document phase. Officials say that next step will ultimately depend on securing funding.
Evansville city leaders are looking ahead to next year’s spending. Mayor Stephanie Terry presented her proposed 2027 budget to members of the City Council, outlining how the city plans to spend more than $152 million on projects and services. Terry highlighted ongoing work to improve roads and invest in community spaces, including parks. The proposed budget also includes funding for road and water infrastructure, energy costs, improvements at the zoo and a new fire station. Terry says the priorities were shaped by feedback from residents, including conversations at events like Traveling City Hall. Terry says roads, stormwater infrastructure, parks, public safety, housing and code enforcement are among the areas residents say matter most. She also addressed the impact of new state legislation that lowers property taxes and the resulting tax revenue deficit facing Indiana cities. Terry says the city will work to use taxpayer dollars as fairly as possible despite those challenges. The proposed budget now goes to the City Council for review, with a vote expected next month.
The University of Evansville is making changes to what students learn outside of their majors. The university has unveiled a new general education curriculum designed to give students more flexibility when choosing classes. School leaders say the new 30-hour program will allow students to shape more of their education around their interests, while also preparing them for life and careers after college. The current general education requirements will remain in place for now. The new curriculum is scheduled to take effect in the fall of 2027.
Last night in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball outlasted Reitz on the road in five sets. The Vikings have won nine of their last ten matches to improve to 10-4 on the season.
North Posey Boys Soccer won at Mt. Carmel, 7-0. Vikings Boys Soccer has won back-to-back matches and is 3-5 overall.
North Posey Boys Tennis won the Posey County battle at home vs Mt. Vernon, 5-0. Vikings Boys Tennis moves to 8-5 and 6-2 in the PAC.
Mt. Vernon Volleyball lost in straight sets at home vs Carmi. The loss ended the Wildcats three-match winning streak as they are now 7-10.
In local college sports last night, USI and Evansville Men’s Soccer ended in a 0-0 tie at UE. The Screaming Eagles are 0-3-3, and the Purple Aces are 1-4-2.
Evansville Volleyball lost in four sets at UT-Martin to fall to 2-8 on the season.
From Major League Baseball on Tuesday night, the St. Louis Cardinals got tattooed in game two of their series at home vs the San Francisco Giants, 10-3. The Giants outhit the Cardinals 12-5. Alec Burleson did hit his 23rd home in the loss for St. Louis. The Cardinals are 75-77 and finish the three-game series vs the Giants this afternoon at 12:15 PM. St. Louis and San Francisco have split the first two games.
The Chicago Cubs let a lead slip away late as they lost at home to the Atlanta Braves, 6-3. The Cubs led 3-0 after the 5th inning, but allowed two runs in the 6th, 7th, and 9th inning. Chicago is 84-68 after splitting the first two games of the series. Series finale is tonight at 6:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds got shutout at home by the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-0. Cincinnati only had three hits. The Reds have lost the first two games of the four-game series and are 70-81 overall. The series continues this evening at 5:40 PM.
The Chicago White Sox suffered a heartbreaking loss at the Cleveland Guardians, 7-6. The White Sox allowed two runs in the 9th inning as the Guardians walked it off thanks to a Brayan Rocchio two-run double with two outs. With the loss, Chicago’s lead for first place in the American League Central Division is down to a 0.5 game over Cleveland. The White Sox are 77-74. The series concludes today at 12:10 PM.
