Coming up this Friday night is Week 6 of the High School Football season. On Tuesday, the updated AP High School Football rankings were released. As has been the theme all year long, several tri-state teams are receiving recognition. In Class 5A, North is 11th and Castle is 14th. In Class 4A, Reitz is 3rd and Memorial is 4th. Class 3A has Heritage Hills 2nd, Gibson Southern 10th and Vincennes 14th. Finally in Class 2A, North Posey is 8th.

 

A Mount Vernon Police Officer was assaulted during the arrest of two people, police say. According to officials, a Detective responded to the 1200 block of East 3rd Street to investigate allegations of a firearm being fired into the ceiling with children present. During the search of the residence, officers located the gun used along with marijuana throughout the home. Police say when officers went to place the residents, 34-year-old Felicia Enlow and her fiancé 34-year-old Jack Anderson, under arrest for Possession of Marijuana, both began to resist. Anderson is accused of spitting on and grabbing the officer. Police say Anderson had to be tased. Both were arrested and transported to the Posey County Jail.

 

Family Matters of Posey County posted on Facebook that applications are now available for the Posey County Christmas Assistance Program. Applications are available at Family Matters, all county trustee’s offices, and many area churches. All completed applications must be returned to the Trustee’s office or Trinity United Church of Christ. The application deadline is Thursday October 12th.

 

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival is quickly approaching, and if you're planning on enjoying the rides, you may be interested in an early bird offer. The West Side Nut Club says presale ride wristbands are now on sale for $25, offering a saving of $5 off the normal price. The wristbands are good for unlimited rides but are only good for one day. The reduced price is only available until midnight on October 1st, which is also "Family Day."

 

Mt. Vernon Football’s Kortez Stewart had a big game last Friday in the Wildcats 42-20 win at home against Forest Park. Stewart had 273 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns and is now up for a couple of weekly awards. He is in the running for both the Home Team Friday’s and Courier and Press Week 5 MVP. Sports Tonight:

  • Mt. Vernon Volleyball plays host to Memorial this evening. The JV match is scheduled for 6:00 PM and the Varsity match will follow around 7:30 PM.
  • Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis is also home as they battle Harrison at 4:30 PM.
  • North Posey Girls Soccer travels to Pike Central at 5:00 PM.
  • North Posey Boys Tennis is on the road to play South Spencer at 5:00 PM.

 

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (67-84) play the 3rd game of a 4-game set at home with the Milwaukee Brewers at 6:45 PM. The two teams have split the first two games of the series. Catch the game on 106.7 FM WMVI.
  • The Chicago Cubs (79-72) and Pittsburgh Pirates do battle in Chicago at 6:40 PM. That is game 2 of their 3-game series.

 

Sports From Tuesday:

  • Mt. Vernon Volleyball (9-6) beat Bosse at home last night.  
  • North Posey Boys Soccer (3-9) earned a 2-0 win at Mt. Vernon (7-5).
  • North Posey Volleyball (17-3) took care of Southridge in straight sets at home.  
  • North Posey Boys Tennis (8-8) lost at home against Heritage Hills, 5-0.

 

  • Evansville Men’s Soccer (2-4-2) got blanked at home against the 10th ranked Louisville Cardinals, 2-0.
  • USI Men’s Soccer (1-6) was able to get in the win column as they topped Northern Kentucky at home last night, 3-2.

  • The Chicago Cubs (79-72) walloped the Pittsburgh Pirates at home 14-1.

 

  • The Cincinnati Reds (79-74) got stomped by the Minnesota Twins in Cincinnati, 7-0.
