The Evansville Police Department reported that an "active shooter" incident had taken place at the West Side Walmart on Thursday night. The call of an “active shooter” came in at 9:59 PM. The department posted the alert to social media at 10:12 p.m. Two minutes later at 10:14 pm, the EPD tweeted that the "threat had been neutralized and is in custody." Sgt. Anna Gray, a department spokeswoman, said the suspect was shot and killed by police at the scene, and that the suspect had fired back at officers "multiple times." Gray said one victim of the shooting was alive at the scene and taken to a hospital. She had no information on the victim's condition. “A lot of people were fleeing,” Gray said. “We do ask that any witnesses call in if they have information.” Dozens of officers from the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police were on scene, with ambulances also parked in front of the store.

 

A former Posey County Councilman has been sentenced to nine months of probation. Court records show there was a plea agreement for Aaron Wilson. They say the count of intimidation was dropped, and Wilson pleaded guilty to battery. Last June, Indiana State Police were called to Wilson’s home in Poseyville for a fight. They say Wilson hit a man during the fight.

 

The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra received a big check during a presentation on Thursday. The Philharmonic received over $200,000 from the Vanderburgh County Commissioners and council members to help the orchestra. Kim Bredemeier, executive director of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, says they are currently partnering with other nonprofits in the area to help present their new “Tradition Series.” Tickets are free this season to all currently enrolled students.

 

People in need of food can come to Pleasant Ridge Estates today as Feed Evansville will be handing out food boxes from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The address in 4901 Pleasant Ridge Drive. That’s on the northeast side of Evansville.

 

Officials with Tri-State Food Bank say the organization's next mobile food giveaway event is on the calendar in Evansville. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Tri-State Food Bank will hold its next mobile food distribution event at Bosse Field. The food share event is happening from 10 a.m. to noon, or until boxes run out. Nothing is required to receive a food box, but Tri-State Food Bank says there is a limit of one food box per household. Bosse Field is located at 23 N. Main St. in Evansville.

 

A bill to help prevent human trafficking in Indiana is one step closer to becoming law. On Thursday, House Bill 1196 passed on its second reading. There were no amendments to the proposal. The legislation would require training for people getting their commercial driver's licenses or permits. They would learn how to recognize, prevent, and report possible human trafficking. The House has to hold a third reading before it goes to the Senate for consideration.

- Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball (5-9) lost at Carmi, 62-50. 

- North Posey Girls Basketball (8-8) defeated Wood Memorial at home, 47-42. 

- USI Womens Basketball (9-9, 3-4) earned a 73-60 victory at Lindenwood. Hannah Haitcock had 31 points for USI. 

- USI Mens Basketball (11-9, 4-3) took care of Lindenwood on the road, 81-65. Jelani Simmons led the way with 24 points. Trevor Lakes poured in 21 points and Isaiah Swope added 16 points for the Screaming Eagles. 

- From other Mens College Basketball last night...#3 Purdue (18-1) thumped Minnesota on the road, 61-39. The Boilermakers held Minnesota to just 12 points in the first half. IU (12-6) cruised past Illinois (13-6) on the road, 80-65. Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers with 35 points and 9 rebounds. Western Kentucky (11-8) lost at Louisiana Tech in OT, 85-74. The Tops did not score in OT as they were outscored, 11-0.
