A Posey County church has turned to Facebook to warn the public of a scam involving someone claiming to be with the church. Saint Wendel Catholic Church in Wadesville has informed the public that someone is posing as Father Edward Schnur asking for Amazon gift cards for cancer patients. One of the parishioners told the church about the scam, saying they recognize it as a scam and the number appeared to be local. The church confirmed that it wasn't the Father, and it was a scam. Multiple law enforcement agencies ask not to give any personal information over text unless the source is verified and to contact police if they believe that they are being scammed.

 

The Posey County Sheriff’s Office continues to promote on their Facebook page that they are accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff. You can obtain an application at the office, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM, or download their free app. in the app store. The app is Posey County Sheriff's Office, choose the "join Our Team" tab and under the "Position Applying For" tab, choose Deputy Sheriff. Starting pay is $45,750.00 with full benefits and retirement.

 

Coming up this evening on 106.7 FM WMVI it’s the Mt. Vernon Basketball Coaches show live from United Fidelity Bank in Mt. Vernon. Allen Buck will host the show and will chat with Wildcats Boys Basketball Head Coach, Joe Newcomb. Mt. Vernon is 3-6 on the season and will play at Forest Park on Friday and at North Posey on Saturday.

 

A current City of Evansville leader says he won't be looking for an elevated position in 2023. Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer made an announcement on Monday, saying he wouldn't be running for mayor in 2023 despite an outpouring of support and encouragement. Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke had previously announced that he wouldn’t be seeking re-election. Names in the race for the 2023 election currently include Cheryl Musgrave, Natalie Rascher, and Gabe Whitley.

 

The victim of a New Year's Day murder in Evansville has been identified. The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office said Monday that the man who was killed was 49-year-old Todd Keith Roll of Evansville. Roll's body was found in a creek behind the Showplace Cinema theater off First Avenue after he was shot and killed, authorities said. A 21-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder in the case. Police said that man was Brandon Schaefer, who said he didn't know the victim and had "thought about killing someone for some time." Police said they took Schaefer into custody at his apartment, and that he had taken Roll's clothing and worn it home after the shooting. They say Schaefer admitted to shooting Roll in the head. Schaefer will appear in court for the first time on Thursday at 1:00 PM.

 

Sports:

- North Posey Boys Basketball picked up a pair of wins yesterday in the Toyota Classic. The Vikings defeated Wood Memorial, 74-67 and White River Valley, 54-32. With the 2 wins, North Posey is now 6-5 on the season. 

- In Men's College Baskeball, #1 Purdue lost for the first time as they fell at home to Rutgers, 65-64. The Boilermakers are 13-1 on the year. 

- Purdue Football lost their Citrus Bowl game against #17 LSU, 63-7. The Boilermakers ended their season with an 8-6 mark. 

- Illinois Football stumbled in the ReliaQuest Bowl against #22 Mississippi State, 19-10. The Illini wrap up their year with an 8-5 record. 

- The Indiana Pacers won their 4th-straight game at home against the Toronto Raptors, 122-14. Benedict Mathurin had 21 points to pace Indiana. The Pacers have won 6-of-7 and are sitting at 21-17 on the season.
